The Total Body Lift

The Total Body Lift, by Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, is an introspective report that details the plastic surgery element of weight loss as experienced by eight patients. The book comprehensively describes Dr. Hurwitz’s signature total body lift procedure, both from the surgeon’s perspective and his patients’. Some of the areas covered are Reshaping The Breasts, Chest, Arms, Thighs, Hips, Back, Waist, Abdomen And Knees After Weight Loss, Aging And Pregnancies.

Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, clinical professor of surgery (plastic) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has the answer. In his new book TOTAL BODY LIFT™ SURGERY (MD PUBLISH, April ’05) Dr. Hurwitz describes the revolutionary Total Body Lift™ procedure that he has pioneered, an all-in-one solution that quickly, safely and effectively re-shapes the body to better reflect the new person created by gastric bypass procedures. The process is applicable to excess skin created by the effects of normal diet & exercise, aging and pregnancy, as well.

"TOTAL BODY LIFT is one of the best books on the subject that I have ever read, and as Co-CEO of Obesity Help, I've read most of them. We are proud to make this important book available through our bookstore to our nearly 300,000 members and to the more than 50,000 people who come to ObesityHelp.com every day."

Jeannie Colter (JC), Co-CEO, ObesityHelp.com

For more than 60 years, plastic surgeons have treated skin laxity with an á la carte selection of individual operations with no organization – a reconstructive procedure for one area of the body was entirely independent of another part of the body and almost always required separate visits that increased the risks and costs involved with re-forming the total body. Dr. Hurwitz looked at this dilemma and decided a unifying approach was necessary to cure the extraordinary deformity caused by excess skin.

Make no mistake about it, removing more than 15 lbs. of excess skin is not a miracle 45-minute in-and-out event. Performed either all at once or in two separate procedures as soon as four months apart, like most surgical events this process is intensive, requires 7-9 hours of surgery and massive blood transfusions, runs the risk of infection and, as with all operations that incorporate anesthesia, can be dangerous. It also leaves patients with significant scars that can be hidden behind most bikini lines, and occasionally they will need additional procedures to take care of extra skin around their arms and other body parts.

Over the years, however, Dr. Hurwitz has refined the process of Total Body Lift™ Surgery to the point of consistency. Total Body Lift™ surgery can be the answer for anyone who is contemplating massive weight loss to combat the serious effects of morbid obesity, or for anyone who looks in the mirror at an advanced age or after multiple childbirths and sees sheets of excess flesh draping their bodies – skin and fat that otherwise has no natural way of re-shaping itself to the body’s new form. This remarkable procedure can help start them on the way to a new, more fulfilling life of normalcy and a level of self-esteem they may never have imagined.

CHAPTER ONE CREATION OF TOTAL BODY LIFT™ SURGERY

TOTAL BODY LIFT™ REPRESENTS A PARADIGM SHIFT IN BODY CONTOURING SURGERY; AN ORIGINAL AND BOLDLY COMPREHENSIVE CORRECTION OF SKIN SAGGING, DEMANDING INSIGHT, ARTISTRY, SKILL, STAMINA, AND TEAM WORK.

For over 60 years, plastic surgeons have treated skin laxity of the trunk and extremities with an à la carte selection of body contouring operations. Sagging breasts are lifted by mastopexy. Oversized arms are reduced by brachioplasty. Bulging stomachs are flattened by abdominoplasty. Thighs deformed by saddlebags are treated by lower body lifts. Drooping and flat buttocks are lifted and augmented. Loose inner thighs require a medial thighplasty. Throughout the body, bulges are reduced by liposuction. There was no organization. The extraordinary deformity caused by massive weight loss demanded a unifying approach.

I created Total Body Lift™ surgery to meet this challenge of extreme body contouring. Total Body Lift™ surgery transforms the entire body in one to two stages. Advances in surgical technique, anesthesia, and patient education converge to make this modern surgery practical. This book chronicles my pioneering effort in Total Body Lift™ surgery, and prepares candidates for their journey.

Since 90 percent of my patients are women, I have written this book mainly in the female gender. However, most of the issues and techniques that are described apply equally to both sexes. Men are not forgotten.

Increasingly, women seek correction of sagging and wrinkled skin following pregnancy, advancing age, or massive weight loss. Aging but healthy baby boomers and successful gastric bypass patients lead this boom. In 2003, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) reported 117,688 abdominoplasties; 76,943 breast lifts; and 147,173 breast reductions by board certified plastic surgeons. Lower body lifts have increased 127 percent to nearly 11,000 procedures, upper arm lifts increased 68 percent, and buttock lifts increased 70 percent. Just for the massive weight loss patients, the ASPS reports more than 52,000 body contouring procedures. That is because massive weight loss leads to unacceptable laxity of the skin. The ASPS estimates that these procedures on post-bariatric patients will have increased 36 percent in 2004. Total Body Lift™ surgery is designed to help this portion of the population and is being applied to many others.
