Sarah Josepha Hale petitioned for a national Thanksgiving holiday for close to 40 years, believing that "Thanksgiving, like the Fourth of July, should be considered a national festival and observed by all our people."

  • The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, but Congress didn't make declare it a holiday until 1941.
  • There are over 600 varieties of yams.
  • The first Macy's parade was actually held on Christmas Day, not Thanksgiving.
  • 46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving.
