Joan Rivers Takes Jabs At Adele’s Weight

March 7, 2013

Joan Rivers is at it again.  It shouldn't be a surprise when the 79-year-old comedian makes fun of another celebrity…not at all. She has made a living doing as such for many years now.  (And I do mean many!) But when it comes to fat jokes about a much loved fan favorite, Rivers is receiving a little bit of backlash.

In a recent appearance on the David Letterman, Rivers took the opportunity to gleefully give singer Adele the old one-two.  After mentioning that she had met Adele back stage at the Oscars, viewers could for a second think something nice was going to come out of Rivers mouth.  But that didn't happen.  Rivers instead opened her arms wide and puffed out her face poking fun at Adele’s weight.  When the audience wasn't too receptive, Rivers smart aleck response was, “Oh, no, no…she’s thin. What is her song Rolling in the Deep?  She should add fried chicken!”  Ouch!

ObesityHelp.comRivers went on to seemingly remember a conversation with Adele in which the popular singer commented that she gets nervous before going on stage.  Referring to Adele, Rivers joked, "She said, my throat, my throat! I don’t know if I can swallow.  And I said, Oh yeah, you can swallow."

To be fair, Rivers also made fun of herself as she quipped that her grandson was mad at her for spending his college fund on Spanx as she gestured towards her rear end and mentioned that “she had a lot going on there”.

The Letterman Show wasn't the first time Rivers took a jab at Adele’s weight.  When Adele gave birth to her first child, Rivers tweeted, “Congratulations to Adele on the birth of her 68-pound, 8-ounce bouncing baby boy.”

And after Adele won an Oscar recently, Rivers couldn't resist yet another jab: “You could easily pick Adele’s Oscar statuette out of a lineup. It was the only one wearing Spanx.”

Fans of Adele lashed out at Rivers in online forums calling her a bully, classless, and poked fun at her plastic surgery procedures.  Comedian Adam Hills ripped Rivers apart in a scathing rant on his TV show, The Last Leg. But Rivers has taken it all in stride and has had her own fans defending her comedic style.

Rivers is not one to back down when her jokes are met with a little backlash.  She is always ready for whatever hits the fan.  When TMZ  recently caught up with Rivers at LAX, she was asked if she had a message for Adele.  Without missing a beat River’s responded, “Yea, lose weight!”
