ObesityHelp Conference Speaker Nikki Massie

April 29, 2014

We’re happy to introduce Nikki Massie, author at Bariatric Foodie, as a speaker for the 2014 ObesityHelp Conference!

Workshop Session: Awkward! (Dealing With Uncomfortable Food Situations And Social Settings After Weight-Loss Surgery)

A business lunch. A family gathering. A first date. These events can be stressful enough by themselves, but after weight loss surgery they can be, well, awkward! Join Bariatric Foodie author Nikki Massie to discuss how to get through some of life’s most challenging food situations with intact and on plan!

In this workshop, Nikki will talk about:
  • What to do about the waiter/waitress who insist on bringing you the glass of water!
  • Tips for food dates after WLS
  • How to navigate large family gatherings where everyone doesn’t know you had surgery (and you don’t want them to)
  • General restaurant tips
  • Your birthday: to cake or not to cake?

About Nikki

Nikki Massie is the author of Bariatric Foodie, a cooking blog and online community that encourages weight-loss surgery post-ops (and others looking to lead healthy lifestyles) to play with their food!

After having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in 2008, Nikki found adjustment to post-op life difficult. “In the beginning I was depressed because I thought I’d never eat the foods I love again.” Through her participation in Obesity Help’s forums, however, she learned she could have the tastes she desired if she was willing to be flexible about the ingredients and cooking methods she used. And Bariatric Foodie was born!

Now, as a six-year post-op, Nikki is interested not only in what we eat but how and why we eat. As she works to understand her own food behavior, she challenges her readers to do the same through recipes, interactive challenges and daily discussions.

Nikki is the author of three books: The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein ShakesThe Bariatric Foodie Holiday Survival Guide and The Bariatric Foodie Breakfast Book.

She lives in Baltimore, Md. with her two daughters, cat and dog.
