Veterans Day History
November 11, 1918 was the day fighting ceased during World War I. President Wilson, originally deemed November 11th Armistice Day and it became an official holiday in 1938 to honor World War I veterans. It was later extended to include veterans of World War II, and Congress eventually changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day on Nov. 11, 1954.
