Connie Stapleton, PhD

Connie Stapleton, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist in both the Augusta and Atlanta, Georgia areas. Her practice is primarily devoted to work in the bariatric field and addictions, with an emphasis on food addiction.

Dr. Stapleton completed her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Texas A&M University (1998). She completed her clinical internship at a consortium between the Medical College of Georgia and the Veteran’s Administration. She then worked part-time at the Medical College of Georgia and began her private practice.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Stapleton has focused on working with WLS patients. She has conducted over 4000 pre-surgical psychological evaluations, has developed an online video series (MindPrep www.mindprepvideo.com) to assist patients for the emotional aspects related to bariatric surgery, and has developed and teaches an online 10-week course (GAIN While You Lose [http://www.conniestapletonphd.com/online-services/weight-loss-program]) to assist patients in developing the habits and ongoing ability to engage in the behaviors necessary to maintain a healthy weight.

Dr. Stapleton has written four books specifically for the surgical weight loss patient: Eat It Up: The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss Surgery; Eat It Up: The Workbook; Thriving: Triumph over Trauma; and her latest book, Weight Loss Surgery does NOT Treat Food Addiction.

Traveling and speaking about preparing for bariatric surgery and living healthy afterward is something Dr. Stapleton does frequently. In 2017, she has already spent a month in New Zealand working with bariatric patients and spoke at an international conference on bariatric surgery on the topic of food addiction. Dr. Stapleton provides many free services, including a weekly online program educating people about food addiction.

When she’s not working, Dr. Stapleton is nearly always with her husband and their 7 grandbabies (oh, and the babies’ parents…)!
