    Topic: RE: Last meal syndrome

My poor body--I was actually trying to GAIN weight up until my approval this week! I was afraid that my bmi of 39 would not qualify me. But it did, and thank the Lord it went pretty quickly before I gained any more. I had gained 10 lbs since the beginning of the year! Now, I hope to lose that before surgery. I have weaned myself from caffeine and sugar (two huge steps), and have started using my gazelle for something beside a clothes rack. I'm trying various protein supplements, both trying to "load up" and to figure out what I like. I actually had to buy bigger jeans this week. But of course, now there is nothing to help with the cravings. I hope this gets easier post-op!

I'm looking forward to romping on the floor with my grandson without being short of breath or having trouble getting up! (Wow, Kelley, I just read your profile--you have been at this a long time! Congratulations on getting your date after all the hoops you had to jump through!) Joy "Canary" (3/1)

Topic: RE: BMI OF 40 WITH NO KNOWN CO-MORBITIES...AM I CRAZY TO HAVE WLS?

I am in a similar position -- BMI of 39. In the process of getting insurance qualified, I had a sleep study and was surprised to discover sleep apnea. I also have some degree of arthritis causing back pain which is aggravated by my weight. These definitely helped get insurance approval, but like you, I am mostly trying to improve my quality of life and prevent further problems. As far as extra risk, the immediate risk of surgery should be much lower for lightweights because incision healing is easier, and blood clots and heart complications are much less likely to happen. The only thing that I can even imagine to be a potentially higher risk would be greater malnourishment risk, i.e. can't stop losing when you should. This can be mitigated by a firm lifelong commitment to nutritional supplements and adequate dietary protein intake. Is there something else I am not aware of?

    Topic: Last meal syndrome

The insurance approval process was tough on me. I was terrified that I would not qualify with a bmi of 39, on the basis of co-morbidities. I found myself consciously eating to intentionally gain weight for the first time in my life. I think I finally found something that I have a real talent for. Thank goodness my approval went through in about 3 weeks--I gained 10 lbs in that length of time! I'd like to shed that before surgery to maximize the surgery impact, but now I have this voice saying "Pretty soon you won't be able to enjoy this ...." Am I the only one fighting this battle??

Topic: RE: After waiting impatiently for a year I GOT APPROVED !!!

Congratulations! I can't imagine what you and others have gone through. I was one of the "lucky" (i.e. BLESSED) ones that got insurance approval on the first try. I know the wait has been terrible, and now here we sit, once again WAITING! I think we are opening a door to a better life. I too got excellent reports on my doctor from other doctors, and that really helped my confidence. I guess, I'm at the point where I have researched, and prayed, and things have worked out, so there is no turning back for me! I hope you can easily pass this month of waiting as you plan for the new life that awaits you! Joy (3/1)

Topic: RE: Exicited and Scared to death.......

Congratulations Kimberly, on getting a date! I think we all wait with a mixture of excitement, hope, and anxiety. For me, staying busy is helping. And reading/learning as much as I can about the new life. Welcome to the Marchers! Joy (3/1/04)

Topic: RE: "March Niners" - March 9th surgeries

Can I join? I figure it this way: Niners rhyme with Miners Miners used to use a canary in a cage to go ahead of them to make sure there was enough air and that it was safe--if the canary made it they were fine. Well, my date is March 1, and I cheerfully volunteer to be the Niner's Canary Mascot. I will boldly go first into this great unknown adventure and report back. Deal?

Topic: RE: Nerves getting the best of me.

Joanne, We are all just like you. If we could stay on a diet--lose and maintain--we would not be having surgery!! Think about it! Take a deep breath and seek out some profiles of people who have had the surgery. You will see that most report the same problems with food, but this surgery makes it possible. No, it won't be easy, especially at first, but it will tip the scales to the possible side! Hang out on this site. Get to know people on your state board who have already been there. You will do fine. Waiting is really hard, but we have been waiting all our lives, what is a few more weeks! If you need to talk, feel free to email me. We are in this together. Dont be afraid to ask for

Topic: March 1 - Who else?

My surgery just got postponed a week from Feb 23 to March 1. I am having a hysterectomy at the same time. Both procedures are open. Won't that make for a fun recovery? NOT! But better than 2 separate surgeries. I'd love to hear from others who are leading this March pack (at least time-wise). It will be great when we are sharing support on the other side of this!
