Topic: RE: Hair loss
Hi, my hair was thin to begin with.  My dietitian recommends 60 - 80 grams of protein a day plus 1500 - 3000 mcg of biotin per day.  I am 9 months out and my hair is now re-growing.  Hair loss is a natural side effect of by-pass surgery and rapid weight loss.  This is something that should have been explained to you at the very start.  While I was a little shocked at how much hair I was losing at one point - I  knew to expect it and I also knew that it would stop.

I have a great health team.

Topic: RE: Aug weigh in..
Hi everyone,
On Nov. 13, 2007 I had surgery and weighed in at 263. I now weigh 149 and size12 pants. I feel much better after removing my gallbladder due to stones. I hope to get back to walking everyday to help with my stress levels.

I also have notice this past month my behavior dealing with stress have changed. I am feeling mad at times, because I have changed my relationship with food.  I  miss having my food to comfort me. I miss the instint feel better solution.  I noticed after the surgery I was quick to pop pills for any little pain and enjoyed the feeling being high, way to much.  (I had to flushed the remaining pills.)  I love to go shopping even if I have no money, I will charge. (that's not like me)  I don't give in to other people's demand/wants and I will complain and say NO!!! ( I'm a total *itch but it's about time) I find it hard to deal with questions and attention about my new look from people who knew me heavy and now thin. That's probably the hardest part  for me. Has anyone gone through this or is going through this....

Hi Cathy:

I had my surgery the same day as you!  What a wild ride, huh?  I've gone from 251 to 155 and a size 26 to a size 10.  Life is amazing!

I'm Flo, I had my surgery on November 5th 2007.  I started at 346 lbs. and I'm at 240 now, a loss of 106 lbs.  My loss is slower than some because I'm limited in my exercise choices due to severe Plantar Fasciatis and Achilles Tendonitis in my left foot.  The good news is I also had problems with my right foot that have almost totally cleared up with the weight loss.  Unfortunately I'll need surgery on my left foot to get that one fixed up, but I'm putting that off as long as possible so I'm not "down and out" completely while still losing weight at a decent rate.
LIFE AIN'T ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL...BUT IT'S A BEAUTIFUL RIDE.

Hello, my name is Tammy I had surgery November 28th, 2007 my starting weight was 281 pounds and I currently weigh 166 a total loss of 115 pounds. I still want to lose at least another 16-21 pounds to reach my goal. My life has also changed so much, I have so much more confidence and I can't begin to describe how much better I feel. I also can relate about the 12s! I think I was a freshman in high school the last time I wore a size 12! I currently am having some back problems but hopefully they will get resolved soon, I can't imagine how much worse it would be if I was still carrying around that extra 115 pounds!!?? But aside from that life is so much better than I could have imagined just 9 months ago!!

I had my 9 month follow-up appt with my nurse clinician today, and all is great. I started back into the wls process at 286, weighed 268 on November 20, when I went into surgery. Today, I weighed in at 169! My goal is 150, so I entirely believe I can lose 19lbs by my surgiversary, though the rate of loss has slowed down. I'm wearing size large, and size 10/12 clothing. It has been a great journey! I feel so good, have had a few moments along the way, but everything has been completely worth it! I'm eating around 1,000 calories a day, 3 meals plus a snack. At my meals, i am eating about 3/4 of a cup of food, sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on the food. The feeling of hunger has returned. Some days I don't really feel it, I guess that's when I am totally on track. Other days it about eats me alive. I've also regained my ability to burp, so the farting prob isn't much of a prob anymore. Thank God for that one! I hate the sagging skin, and the unhappy breasts, but I keep reminding myself that there is a lot of shrinking time ahead of me yet. I'm not sure if I would want plastic surgery. Wait and see I guess. I'm going home for a visit next month, where people know I had the surgery, but haven't seen me since my highest weight. I can't wait! I have this odd desire to buy a great dress and get completely dolled up for my arrival. show off the new curves that are replaces the old lumps and bumps! Hope everybody else is well. Would love to hear your stories!

Topic: RE: Anyone drinking coffee or taken caffeine pills and if so any side effects?
I have 1 (rarely 2) cups of full-caffeine coffee in the AM. I'm not one to excessively demonize caffeine, but if you need more of this in a day to stay awake, it might have some adverse effects (mainly GI issues; caffeine can stimulate stomach acid secretion and increase the risk of developing ulcers.) You might try taking it with an acid blocker like Pepcid or Zantac or Prilosec OTC. If one 100mg/200mg caffeine pill (or its equivalent in coffee) doesn't help sufficiently, you might ask your MD for a brief course of Provigil (modafinil) while you're getting used to the night shift. It's a non-amphetamine stimulant approved for just the kind of thing you're worried about. My sleep doc prescribed me a few weeks of it to prevent daytime sleepiness due to sleep apnea until I could get settled in with my new CPAP machine. Provigil is a controlled substance, but it really isn't a whole lot of "fun"; in that regard, it's more similar to caffeine than amphetamine. In fact, I think I still have some pills from a year or so ago which I never finished! /Steve

Hi I am Christine. I had my surgery on Nov. 20 and started at 227 at my first visit. The week before surgery I was 213. Today I am 135-137 pounds. My goal was 144(given to me by the doctor). I am in a size 8/10 pants and small/medium shirts. I know how you feel about the 12s. I was in that size when I graduated from hs 16 years ago. I am actually smaller now than I was then. I am off all meds too except my vitamins. I am so glad I chose to have the surgery, I couldnt have done it without surgery. My energy level is great. I walk every morning and evening. Glad to hear you are doing so well. Christine

Topic: Ulcers
For the past month or so I have had serious nausea, to the point where Im waking myself up in the middle of the night gagging. I called my dr and he put me on Carafate for stomach and intestine ulcers. I however still do not feel any better. If I eat I get nauseas and if I drink colder liquids I get severe stomach cramps. It is so awful. I dont know what it is, hoping someone else has had this and gotten over it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Topic: RE: Hair loss
I think it can't really be helped. I get my protein in and take all my vitamins including Biotin. Mine has gotten so thin on top I see my scalp. I gave in and bought a wig and will wear it till the hair decides to start growing back in. My problem was slightly thinning hair to start with and this just made it worse.

Topic: RE: bad gas and able to eat more ,any body else?
I find that I have more gas when I eat carbs and drink any liquid too soon. I went from 286 to 174 and then hit a plateau. I joined Curves and it made all the difference. I went from 174 to 136, my goal. I hate to exercise, but I have to recommend Curves. The movement from one station to another every 35 sec helps with the boredom and you will soon make friends to talk to as you move around the circuit.

Topic: RE: How many calories do you eat??
You really should try for more food. There are lots of great choices for easy lunches, like sliced turkey and ham. My favorite quick lunch is a pouch of salmon (sold where the tuna is) with some salsa on it and warmed up. There's a great book called "Before and After" by Susan Maria Leach with a lot of good advice and wonderful recipes. Also "Recipes for Life After Weight Loss Surgery" by Margaret M. Furtado is another great source. Both should be available in Borders or Barnes and Noble. Eggface on this website is another AWESOME place for great, as she puts it, "food porn".
