Hello all!

My name is corrina, and Im having open RNY with DR. Nohr this coming monday, March 19th. I am so late with this forum, but really happy to have found it! It's good to see theres a forum specifically for Albertans. I've already been told what to expect, and im uber excited! Im 22 years old, and have been waiting patiently on a list for 9 years (from my first consultation). I believe he wanted to see if I would lose the weight on my own, since i was just a kid when I first seen him. But, as you can see, that didn't go so well. I was just wondering for anyone who's had dr. nohr, did any of you have complications or know his complication/ mortality rate? When I had my appointment back with him in 2009, to pick a date for surgery.. I didn't ask very many questions and since then have researched the HELL out of this surgery, and I do have a few questions now. Lol... but I think it's too late to ask him, unless I bombard him as his anasiethist(sp) is putting me to sleep. Lol.... Don't think thats going to happen.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery with Dr Nohr.  I had the RNY done laproscopically with him back in Oct 2011.  I had zero complications and am very happy with things so far.  It's quite the life change...for the better!  I had a list of questions at my consult appt and I recall that Dr Nohr said he has never lost anyone on the table.  I can't recall if I prodded further but if I did, his answer did not scare me off.
good luck tomorrow.  Remember to walk as much as you can while at the hospital.  Enjoy those silly leg air thingy's.  I know they have to be worn for a reason but I found them an annoyance.  
Soon you will be on the loser's bench!  We'll make some room.

 Thank you, thats great news! im so happy to hear that he hasn't lost anyone on the table. I wish I would have been more prepared but when I went to that appointment I was only 17... so I didnt think much of gasric bypass except it was kind of a release, I didnt take it very seriously. But now I realize how crazy important it is to do everything he says, and to change my entire lifestyle. Unlike you though, Im going in for Open gastric bypass... Which im imagining is the same thing except bigger insisions... Whicch is not a big deal to me. 

Im super excited! Thank you for the response, It makes me feel better about the whole 'going to sleep' thing.

I am curious why open over laproscopic surgery? 
I see my surgeon next week, I hear 4-6 weeks wait (from previous posts).
Isnt this forum great, so many people from the WWC in Edm. , this is fabulous research, I was going to call WWC to see if there was patients who would relay their stories ( as part of the preparation). Now I have found this forum I have gotten all my questions answered.

Open wasn't exactly a choice I made for myself, but it was one that made me feel a little better. the reason for it was I was smaller when i first got accepted to get it done, I lost weight, and then after the appointment I gained a bunch, so i pshed back my surgery from June to march of this year, and THEN I tried to lose the weight but failed horribly, so i just decided to change it to open. Which makes me feel a lot better for some reason. Even though I'll have a big scar (not like Im going to be doing bathing suits anyways lol) and i just really prefer having him be able to see inside me through cutting, not with cameras... 

 When I had my initial assessment with Dr Nohr I recall that the wait time to get lap RNY was quite a bit longer then the open.  Up to a year longer I believe.  Plus I think you had to be under a certain BMI to choose lap RNY.  I chose to go with the lap RNY mainly because it was less invasive and the recovery would be easier and quicker.  The scars did not matter to me.  Maybe if I was younger I would have thought differently about the scars.  I am hoping to have the panni down the road so will have a large scar with that anyways.  It's a personal choice forsure.  I know he Dr Nohr does alot of opens as well as laps.  Don't worry, you will do great during surgery.  We all decide on surgery because we want to live healthy.

Congrats on yout sugery!!!  Dr Nohr is an amzing Dr and i have nothing but great things to say about him. Your in wonderful hands.  I had open RNY Dec 5 2011, and it was scary, but im glad its done and on the road to recovery.  You will be sore and quite groggy the first few days, but the nurses and Dr nohr will there for you to answer any questions or concerns.    Good luck, and best wishes for a fast and speedy recovery

 HI I am new here I had my surgery May 07/2012 with Dr Nohr,m I must say he is a great doctor and the staff are amazing they are the nicest nurses i have come across in Alberta. You had your surgery already and are in your first stage of post-op as I am would love to share our challenges and accomplishments..GL with your surgery
