Are any of you experiencing dry mouth while you sleep?  I'm waking up many times a night having to drink water because my mouth is so dry. I've heard that this is not good for our teeth and my dentist told me the same thing. Anyone not experiencing this and if not are you drinking alot of water before you go to bed or what??  I'm always worrying it may be affecting my teeth so I keep water on my nightstand all the time but heck it is annoying waking up so much at night! Just wondering if others are experiencing this and if there's anything they take to eliminate or help with this problem?

I'm a mouth-breather (yeah, I admit it) and have always needed something to drink on my nightstand.  Before surgery and after.  I have a drink probably 3-5 times/night.

What?  The dentist told you that drinking water at nighttime is hard on your teeth!  HUH?  I don't get it! It's JUS****er!  You hear something new everyday!  I don't usually drink water in the middle of the night because I tend to reflux it back up when I lay down, but I do when I have to.

If it's from sleeping open mouthed like Diana said, I have no idea how you could stop such an unconscious act, except for some kind of mouth clamp.  If one exists, keep my husband in the dark, okay?  He may want to use it on me when I'm wide awake.

Oh yeah!  Don't tell my husband either!  You all KNOW how much I talk on here.....just wait until you hear me in person!  I bet he'd love to have a muzzle or clamp, especially during his favorite games!

There is a chin srap that they offered at the clinic where I got my cpap. I am a mouth breather too so the cpap was a hard thing to get used to. chin strap is the politically correct term for muzzle r clamp - ha ha!

Yep, I have that problem, too, only it didn't start happening until I spent so long in the hospital NPO (nothing by mouth.)  It go so bad that even talking made it so dry.  I still wake up in the night a couple of times needing something to drink.  My doctor said that isn't normal and that I should make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat guy, but I haven't yet.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.  - Martin Niemoller

Hi Sharon! I broke off my engagement about a month ago but we were still seeing each other alot but things just didn't seem right to me, too many red flags. Well, just this past week I decided to completely end our relationship. No more seeing him, I need to just be done with it and move on. So right now I'm just taking a break from any dating, but I won't be bitter and will probably try dating again in a couple months. How are you doing Sharon??

I was almost at 100# loss (2# short) and haven't been close to that goal for the last few months.  I've been on a carb. binge.....think it's related to some serious health problems my hubby's been going through.  My life revolves around his health needs and his physical ups and downs.  Everyday i wake up and promise myself I'm going to keep my carbs below 50.......hah!!!, I find I've eaten that much before noon!!!  I know it's all mental....but we all know we had gut surgery not brain surgery! I really think I need to change up my routine.  I'd like to start going to Curves but it seems like everytime I make up my mind I'm going to start, DH's health takes a dip (and he doesn't even know I'm thinking about going!) or I need to take him to a series of medical tests or doctors' appointments.  Sorry, I didn't mean to go on like this.  I'm just really disgusted with myself right now. Deb, you are such a lovely person.  I wish you the best when you begin dating again.  How about your sister's circle of friends and acquaintances?  Perhaps there's someone she could introduce you to when the time is right again. Sharon I have always has trouble staying away from carbs, too, even from the very beginning. Sweets have always been such a huge part of my life. I can't imagine living without them. I haven't been able to limit them much, I'm down from my all time high of 276 to 270 and  have been at this weight for a couple months now. I just can't seem to stay away from sweets, if I could have I'm sure I would be at goal now. I lost the weight I did lose still eating sweets, I feel like the only way I could stay away from them is if someone tied me down, that's how much hold they have on me, and always have. I feel great tho, haven't felt this good in years but would like to get down to 160, I got down to 163 when I had the band and was very happy at that weight so hoping I can get back down to that when I can soon get out and start getting my walks in. I hate walking in the cold weather and don't do it but I enjoy it alot when it's nicer out so hopefully the warmer weather will get here soon, maybe this week and I can get out and enjoy my walks again. So sorry to hear you are having to deal with so much and will keep your hubby in my prayers, sounds like you have your hands full. You are doing so great with your weight loss tho, good for you, Sharon!

Certain medications cause dry mouth as well. Have you started on any new meds? The Paxil that I'm on gives me awful dry mouth. It's a side-effect that I totally hate. I never had a problem before I started taking Paxil, so I know it's the Paxil (it's listed as one the side-effects). I have to keep water next to my bed and drink all night. Then it makes me have to get up and pee all the time too. I haven't yet found a resolution...and I'm sure I'm not getting very good sleep because of this problem. Sigh!

I remember reading in Dear Abby about 15 years ago (yeah call me rain man) that there was a product that you swooshed around in your mouth and acted as artificial saliva.  It's labels for dry mouth but perhaps it can help at night? Scott  I found this on a quick google search: http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/dental/xerostomia.htm

Hi.  I have chronic dry mouth and it is especially debilitating while sleeping and it is a terrible experience to wake up each morning with my mouth literally glued shut.  I too used to get up many times at night to sip water.  Dry mouth at night is very debilitating!  Well, I decided NOT to lose sleep over it anymore!

I think I can help you with dry mouth at night.

And yes, I tried ALL the commercial products that you probably are familiar with even some stuff from Germany before it was available in the USA.  NOTHING WORKED !!!

See, in 2007 I battled T4 Squmous Cell Carcinoma.  It originated in my right sinus, took out my cheek bone, my hard palate and parts of my soft palate, my right upper jaw and 6 teeth.  It also migrated down into my neck and took out my left side lymph nodes.

Dr. Carol Shores is my angel.  She did all my surgeries.  I also had chemo and radiation therapy.  I wear what is called an obturator.  It is a titanium plate that has a plastic speech bulb on it that protrudes into my right sinus.  That allows me to speak and eat.  It also has a plastic jawbone and 6 fake teeth.  I remove it at night.

The radiation permanently kills the salivary glands, rendering a mouth without saliva.  Because of this I can no longer eat solid foods.  I have to drink every meal.  I eat 6 times a day.

My meals consist of a 5 cans of high protein nutrients, a dash of protein suppliment mixed in, a glass of V8 each evening, and a cup of clam chowder soup.  A local restaurant down the road from me strains the soup, removing all solids.  I buy a gallon at a time which lasts me a couple of weeks.

Anyway, getting back to severe dry mouth.  Everytime I speak for long periods of time (1 minute), or do physical work or activity, or when I sleep my mouth would feel like chewing on metal filings and glue!  Not fun!

And yes.  Dry mouth is SERIOUS when it comes to tooth and gum disease.  Dr. Shores prescribes an antibacteria solution which is very beneficial.

So, I got mad then turned that mad energy into creative eneergy by developing what I call the dry mouth pump.  It is a mini pump that is controlled by an electronic programmable controller.  It pumps water through tiny tubing into a tiny foam-sponge mouth piece. It drips water into my mouth closest to the most natural way of wetting the mouth!  Hands free!

I have been using the dry mouth pumpt for a year now.  Guess what?  NO DRY MOUTH at NIGHT!  No getting up!  No missed sleep!  No garbage mouth when I wake up!  I feel refreshed EVERY MORNING.

I also wear the dry mouth pump (waist pack) when I do physical activity or speaking.  No more carrying bottles of water around.  No more embarrassment of my mouth not opening up.

I wear it out in public and people don't even notice.  I even went through TSA at airports without a hitch.

Anyway ...

I saw this post about dry mouth and  I wanted to share with you my success with chronic dry mouth and hopefully you can turn yours into a positive experience too :O)

Kind regards,
Al Toman
