the amount we take of some medications and vit then why do some ds'ers find if they drink they become intoxicated quicker after surgery?  I do not know where alcohol is absorbed in our system I assume it begins in the stomach lining but I could be way off.  I may have a drink twice a year and I am a cheap drunk to begin with before my surgery,  if alcohol will impact me quicker then I am thinking I should simply omit it from my intake all together.  If I try to think of this logically I would seem one would have to take in more alcohol along the same lines as the medication or vitamins but this logic does not hold up with the experiences I have read on here.
Thanks
Donna

Some of us tried to argue, or explain, the quick buzz to our dietitian and she was not buying it logically either. I know what I feel but I don't know the science behind it.

I normally do not like the taste of most alcohol but on a recent vacation I did enjoy kahlua and milk combined on ice and it was tasty but not something which would win if I had to chose between it and my new DS.  thanks Donna

Just FYI---Kahlua and milk will *probably* give you some horrible gas post-DS. That's one drink that nearly killed me, gas-wise, PRE-op!

Alcohol is absorbed beginning in the mouth, and continues to be absorbed throughout the digestive tract. However, I've never noticed that it hits me any harder or faster---but I do sober up faster and, well, cleaner. As in no hangover. (Well, at least I haven't had a hangover since my DS 8 years ago, and I do enjoy my ****tails. *grin*)

To cute nothing wrong with a ****tail once in a while.  I think I will learn from you experience and avoid Kahlua all together as it does not sound like a pleasurable evening and it best untested!  Thank you for sharing

That is the only way I could drink Kahlua?  or do they drink it straight?  I am not sure if this is a drink or if the bartenders were joking but they kept asking me if I wanted vodka with the Kahlua and Milk it did not sound good but since I was asked by more then one Spanish bartender in Ixtapa I started thinking maybe it was a real drink.  PS I have been told dossers tolerate half and half better then milk. Sounds like I should of avoid lactate for the first 3 months. I can drink almost a gallon a day................bad girl
Thanks

You can drink Kahlua straight. Kahlua and vodka is a Black Russian. When you add milk, cream, or, even better, a dollop of vanilla ice cream, it becomes a White Russian. White Russians gave me debilitating gas even as a pre-op.

Some people become lactose intolerant, and some are more intolerant than others. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn't. Even DSers who aren't intolerant often use half-n-half or heavy cream instead, because---well, because we CAN, LOL!

But you do need to avoid all alcohol while you're in the rapid weight-loss phase. Not only is alcohol high in non-nutritional calories, it's hard on the liver---and so is rapid weight loss. If you're lucky, you'll have gotten over any lactose intolerance by the time you're ready for ****tails again.

lol thank you.  The ice cream sounds good not sure about the vodka.  I plan on experimenting with proteins shakes with water while I am on the 5 day preop diet.  My dr office said it was OK so long as I did not mix it with milk.  I am a bit worried about absorption of effexor I figured I would get it changed from extended release to immediate release.  I do not want to be a tearful mess during my recovery as I will be dealing with enough.  In the past if I was ill & did not take my anti depressant effexor after a few days it does something with my receptors in the brain and without it I become very nauseated and vomit.  Of  course to get to that side effect it takes not taking for 2 to 3 days and I have not done that in a long time only if I was ill.  I hope if I take them on a regular bases and they are not time released I will not have an upset stomach as I would imagine it would be awful.  What I have experienced from low levels of effexor is bad enough I certainly would not want to put a new surgical stomach through that....................  thanks for the education.  Donna

Just be aware that a shake you LOVE pre-op you well may HATE post-op---surgery sometimes does a number on the taste buds.

Yes, you probably will need to change to an immediate release---our shortened gut doesn't always play well with extended-release meds. I suggest discussing this will your surgeon, whatever doc prescribes your Effexor, and perhaps your pharmasist as well.

I have read that a lot about the taste buds it seems strange but for as many times I read it I assume it must be true.  Since the taste buds are in your mouth it seems so strange.  I have read anesthesia can cause you to be depressed and it lingers in your system for a while so I do not want to play around with the effexor.
Thanks

I doubt taste buds have anything to do with medication---that happens in your gut. BUT---tastes DO change post-op. I haven't really stopped liking anything I liked pre-op---but I have come to CRAVE things I just couldn't stand  before.

Post-op, I craved any kind of pickle, deviled eggs, cole slaw, did I say PICKLES?

I am sorry if I wrote it wrong I did not mean to confuse taste buds and medications..................  2 different thoughts I guess I am curious so I keep writing when I should stick to one thought.  Here I go again............I did file a recipe on pureed egg salad it sounds good.  I heard from my DS dr and he agrees with you to get the immediate release effexor.  have a good night.  Donna

Mrs Batts

When did you think it was safe to drink half and half? meaning how many months out from your surgical date?
Thanks
Donna

It's been so long I honestly don't remember. I DO remember making some home-made lime sherbet about six months post-op, and having some of the worst gas of my life---I think there was something about the combination of half-n-half and lime juice, because I'd had milk and cream before that. About I tried it again about 3 months later and it was fine. (I make this with Splenda, BTW, and ice cream, too---with real cream. *grin*)

Thanks to both of you.  I do not drink often but I just came back from vaca and on the beach I had a few it was very nice.  Especially since I felt like I was choking on the food at the resort related to my lap band.
Have a good evening.

I think much of the alchohol is absorbed in the intestine, which our systems offer the "express ride" to and from.  Not only am I a cheap drunk (half a ****tail gets me tipsy now), but I sober up incredibly fast if I don't continue drinking (I usually ride the first buzz and that's it).
