Topic: RE: Dr Herron? Not discouraged anymore!!
I think DR herron is getting a bum rap and it is unfair.

When I met him he did not one time try to discourage DS, or convince me to go with another surgery.
Furthermore he does still do DS and told me he does 1-2 a month.
He was very nice, straight forward and his office has been a pleasure to deal with.

Whe I mentioned in a post that I may use him, NOT ONE PERSON mentioned a bad experience, just a few people supporting other DRs

Topic: RE: Pre-op testing: Anesthesia...wheeeeeee
Ive been doing my pre-op.
Fun to get the ball rolling as they say
Im 5 months into my monitored diet so Im looking forward to moving forward.

[ x ] Psychiatric evaluation
[ x ] diet history
[ x ] surgeon consult
[ x ] PFT, xray
[ x ] nutritionist
[ x ] endoscopy
[   ]  sleep study
[   ]  cardiologist

Did the endoscopy today. what a blast! anestheisia is crazy! I asked the Dr for some anesthesia to go, but he said they cant do that :( . Truthfully though I was happy it went smoothly because my main fear of the surgery was that my body wouldnt work with anesthesia like I saw on 20/20 has happenned a few times.

Not sure if they can help, but if I were you Id talk to a salesperson at Mens Wearhouse.  GL
Topic: RE: Dr. Herron Mt Sinai
Another strange thing... in the OH surgeon section he has 90 testimonials. All seem positive.

BUT he only has 3 testimonials in the last 3 years...odd
Topic: RE: Dr. Herron Mt Sinai
Well this sucks that there  is not one positive statement.

Everyone in the office was nice, and they seemed to have no problem with me choosing DS. Nobody tried to talk me into anything else.

Do I really need to switch Drs again?

I thought he was good because hes been doing WLS forever.

...I guess Ill call tomorrow and see how often he does DS

So do you all wanna weigh in on who the best DS Dr is in NYC?

Topic: RE: Coming home from hospital
Whats it like coming home, aside from what you eat I havent seen much....

Do I need someone home with me 24/7 for the first few days/week?

How painful is it?

Can I move around on my own?
Topic: RE: Things I/you/we are looking forward to about being thinner
I am looking forward to:

1-Less pain in the back

2-Rididng the rollercoasters with my daughter

3-Not being tired when I move

4-Being able to play sports again (1&3)

5-Being able to do more home renovations (1&3)

6-Better (possibly more) sex (1&3)...I heard something about 1 inch per 50 lbs

7-Not being huge

I was on my way to RNY in Staten Island even tough I had always wanted DS. They say on their website that they offer it, but they bait and switch you... they dont offer it there at all.
I almost fell for it, but with the help of this forum I am now  on the way to DS. In addition Dr. McMullen was rushed and not very nice which made it easy to change doctors

I found Dr Herron on the web, and went to meet him the other day. He and his entire staff were really nice, and the office was much nicer than staten Island too.

I was wondering if anyone who still posts used him for their surgery, and their opinion.

BTW... is there any way to change surgeon name in the left column by my pic?

Topic: RE: Really bad news for me!
So sorry for u.... that is so horrible.
Topic: RE: Why DS over RNY?
1. I posted this same question a few months ago. It led me to change my plans for an RNY and just yesterday  met with Dr. Herron in NYC for DS.

2. From what most people say there is more gas/****z on DS, not close to the horror  stories people tell though

3.People trying to prove DS is better because people get revisions to DS from other surgeries is silly. DS is the most drastic!
You CANT put a lap band on a previously DS stomach
You CANT sleeve a stomach that has already been sleeved
You CANT RNY a stomach that has already been DS (from what I understand)

I think DS is the best WLS choice out there, but there is a lot of chearleading in the DS forums, make sure any info you take can be confirmed

Take out box springs, replace with plywood ur bed is now about a foot lower
Topic: RE: I am torn between surgery options
Thanks again for the responses. It did seem hard to believe that people were on the toilet every 3 hours, I mean that would make it very difficult to get through life.

The vitamins do seem to be 3x a day or so, but thats no big deal as I take painkillers 3x a day now anyway thanks to being fat. Guess I wouldnt mind trading my oxycontin in for calcium and iron...lol.

Sounds more and more like I know what I should do... I'll keep you all posted

Thanks
Topic: RE: I am torn between surgery options
First Id like to thank everyone for the help.

When I mentioned travel I meant for my family, I have no problem traveling if I need to, I was worried about my wife being able to get to the hospital, especially if there were complications and I had to stay a while.

I think its rather telling that I made the same post here and in the RNY forum and people here seem much more satisfied with their choice.

I acually made the OP right before /i went to a support group. The people there (rny guys)said that DS patients tend to have to crap evry 3 hours or so, and have to take LOTS of vitamins Many times a day...how true are those 2 ideas?
Topic: RE: I am torn between surgery options
Originally when I did research a few years ago I liked the DS option. Recently I went to finally get the ball rolling and the hospital by me JUST stopped offering it... So I have proceeded along the RNY path. I am addicted to reading the OH boards and the DS has snuck back into my mind.

DS seems to be the miracle surgery the more I read...

Bigger stomach
Ability to eat more normally
Greater weight loss potential (80% vs 70%)
More long term success
No "dumping" ...but more gas

The RNY doesnt seem to have many benefits over DS, except that I can do it at a hospital near my home.
What am I missing DS professionals?
