Topic: RE: What's after all the clearences??? Dr KIm patient
When Michael scheduled my surgery he told me that Dr Kim likes to do RNYs on Wednesday's now - that's what day I had mine a month ago.  Also, I just had my 1 month checkup this past Thursday and I confirmed that the support meeting is this coming Wednesday (11/11).

I hope to see you there!!  :)

Hi - I had my RNY with Dr Kim on 10/7/09.... I faxed my information (all the tests, clearances, etc...) to the office on Tues 9/14 and that Friday I got a call to schedule my surgery - which ended up being only 19 days later.  I probably could have asked for a later date but I just wanted to get it all over with.   You'll have a pre-op appt with Dr Kim and he'll go over the surgery and any questions you might have.  You'll also have a nutrition class and metabolism test on the day of your pre-op appt too.

Seriously, there is nothing to be worried about - I felt totally the same prior to having my surgery scheduled but Dr Kim is so cool - it was a good experience overall.

Good Luck!!!!!  :)

I like the Pure Protein line.  They have the best protein/calorie ratio for me and they taste pretty good.  My favorite ones are the Strawberry Shortcake and S'Mores flavors.

Topic: RE: anyone have Dr. Webb in Jax for their sleeve?

I had Dr. DePeri who is in the same surgical practice with Dr. Webb.  He did my RnY.  I'm doing great.  I had my surgery as Memorial and it was a great experience.  The staff there were very bariatric friendly and my stay was pleasant.

I especially love the required support that you have to go through at Novus Center.  I think it's been integral in my success so far!

If you do decide to go with Dr. Kim. who I've heard wonderful things about, you can still attend the support groups at Novus!

Good morning everyone.  i am just wondering if anyone had Dr. Steve Webb in Jax do their sleeve.  I am torn between him & being local, or traveling to Celebration for Dr. Kim.  If you did have Dr. Webb, how are you doing?

Thank you so much!  I don't know that I would say I look great, but I certainly look and FEEL better!  When you have completed all the requirements, it's just a matter of scheduling your surgery!  If he hasn't changed his routine since last year, he usually does surgery on Mondays and Tuesdays.  The rest of the week he sees patients in his office.  I think we're having a support group meeting this coming Wednesday at 7:30pm.  You should probably call the office to verify this.  Why don't you try to join us?  I'm pretty sure they want you to go to at least 1 or 2 of these to hear the stories of post surgical patients.  I love the support groups.  It's pretty uplifting and encouraging.  We all learn from them.  Hope to see you there!  Rebecca

Are you self pay? If insurance is paying they usually make you  see a dietician for 6 months.

You need to call the nurses and let them know you've gotten all your clearances.  Once that's done their scheduler (Michael) will call you.  You will need to attend a support group session as well (2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm).  I am just waiting for the January schedule to come out then I'll have my date :)

Have you attended the required information session?  I think they like for you to sit in on a support group meeting, too.  Then there's the session with Bill Kelly.  He runs the metabolic testing for BMR, etc.  The class teaching you about the surgery and what to expect and diet and nutrition in the different stages is taught by one of the nurses and is very helpful.  Hmmm, that's all I can think of right now.  It sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through, but it is soooo worth it!  I'm almost a year post surgery with Dr. Kim and I'm down 161 lbs.  Good luck and look forward to seeing you at the support group meetings!   Rebecca

Hi!

Plateaus stink...plain and simple.....they are no fun.  I was once stuck on one for about 3 months.  I just danced with the same 3 or 4 lbs back and forth.  The body is adjusting as we lose weight and it also gets used to doing the same thing.  It's good to change things up once in a while like you said you are doing.

Have you tried writing down everything you eat and drink....I mean every morsel.  That might highlight some things you can easily change and get the scale moving down again.

Try cooking a couple of easy meals.....you might find you enjoy the cooking and you and hubby might enjoy the home cooked meal.  :-)

HANG IN THERE!  You have come so far!!!!!!!!! DO NOT give up!!!

PM me if you need to chat....I understand the frustrations very well!!

There are many out there who would love to have WLS but for what ever reason they can't.   You were given a great opportunity by having this surgery, don't screw it up by abusing food so soon in to this life long journey.   As someone who is 5 1/2 years post-op I can tell you that it does not get any easier, it gets harder and harder to maintain every year, so get back on track now, start eating better, lose the rest of the weight you want to lose, and go out and enjoy life to it's fullest.  You owe it to yourself to succeed.

I'm not aware of one.  But then my surgeon runs a couple a month at Florida Hosptial in Celebration, so I go there (I believe people who had other surgeons are welcome to attend - there's a lot of out-of-staters who go during the winter).

Comfort Food Really Isn't Comfort is it!!!

You know when you have those day.....when everything is just going wrong. The stress, the emotional ups and downs, with work, (or lack of work) family, friends, etc. So, many times when these things are going on, you just want to turn to that old friend....that is always there to comfort you. FOOD!! It is legal and you can find it anywhere.

Food is so convenient you can drive through somewhere and even eat it in your car when you are running around like crazy getting everything done!!! And know one even has to know you did it!! Except you....then a short time after eating it you feel terrible...usually worse than you did before you ate it! Oh, yes I do know that feeling quit well.

I know you know what I am talking about! This is such a hard habit to change....as I am going through something stressful right now...I did actually think about comforting myself with food....drive through McDonald's get something good and greasy!!! Who would know....that little devil sits on my shoulder and tries to temp me all the time...but thank goodness I have that little angel on the other shoulder saying....You know there are better ways to comfort yourself. Call someone who cares, turn on the radio and sing along with one of your favorite songs...loud enough you can't hear the devil!!!! LOL

Yes, even after almost 9 years I am still tormented by those old thoughts. I think I probably will be for the test of my life. However, by practicing good habits and always thinking of alternatives, I am usually very successful at not letting it rule me or my life! I HAVE EMPOWERED MYSELF TO BE IN CONTROL!!!

So, the next time that little devil sits on your shoulder and tries to take control. Knock him off and remember you can be in control too!!!

Hugs,

Ginger

I really have no wisdom for you.  I have no frame of reference for the band.  But if you are concerned about what you are eating -- the fact that you do not cook should not be an issue.  Anyone can scramble an egg or broil a piece of chicken.  Watch the food network, find recipes for foods that you like.   Deli meat is fast, easy and one does not have to cook it.  Just roll it up with some herb cream cheese spread on it.

You can do this.

Topic: An update and a need for motivation/someone to relate...
I'm 11 months out from Lap Band surgery and down about 90 lbs (not all on the scale, a lot in inches). I'm doing great in a lot of departments, but am getting extremely frustrated at my current state.

I've been at a plateau for about 4 months now, dancing between the same 3 - 4 lbs. I am dedicated to the gym and am there 4 - 6 times a week....I have varied my exercise program, work w/ a trainer, and am still staying the same. I know the whole muscle vs fat thing, and I'm not complaining as I'm at least maintaining, but I need a good, swift kick in the a*#.

My eating habits suck. I'm not even gonna sugar coat it...they've gone extremely downhill. I'm far from where I was, but I'm guilty of the carb or over-eat behavior all too often. I try to make good choices, but it's like I go on auto-pilot....I know if I could get my eating habits back on track, I'd be back in the game.

I'm frustrated, as I'm at a point in my filling process where things often get stuck, despite my actions to avoid it. Sometimes it happens b/c I'm rushing, underchewing, etc, but it also happens a lot just because. Meat in particular has become an issue...something that looks soft and juicy gets stuck like a brick.

I'm not going to support group because I've thrown myself into the gym, and I'm sure that will help get me back on track...you'll see I just posted a request for one in my area. Also, I have a ton of stress on my shoulders right now, and a change in my husband's work schedule has left me fending for myself in the kitchen (bad move!!). We really don't make poor purchases, but I don't cook and don't really know how, and the default often ends up being quick items that carry a lot of fat or something along those lines...

I need help!! I've been so successful, I don't want to lose this now. I'm starting to dislike the girl in the mirror because I feel like I'm cheating myself out of what is important...and that I'm just falling into old habits...

PLEASE - words of motivation, suggestions, an "I've been there and here's what I did"....anything! I'm miserable and I hate this!

Insomnia has gotten me thinking....didn't I see something at some point about a support group that meets at Health Central or somewhere near there?

I really need a good swift kick in the tail to get me headed in the right direction again...I know Celebration has them, but they are so far away from me that I haven't been going - I'm putting my time into the gym instead, but still.... Help!

Have you tried contacting a bariatric surgeon to see if their financial person can guide you with funding surgery?  Maybe they will take you gratis (for free) or allow you to use a payment plan you could manage in light of your medical urgency.  Its a long-shot but who knows?

You may want to post your question on the main message board.  More people will see it an you may find a doc elsewhere who will help you.

Good luck!!

Topic: Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions

http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/crossingtotransferaddictions/

Hi All,

There is a new OH Online Support Group. The above link will get you there.
It's called
Crossing Over to Transfer Addictions.

This group discusses the issue of transfer addictions (also known as cross addictions) after weight loss surgery. there are millions of people who have undergone gastric bypass who are now dealing with issues of addiction transfer.

For a number of people, giving up overeating leads to adoption of a new compulsion. Addiction transfer occurs when someone is unable or unwilling to rely on one compulsion (for us, it was food) and so switches to a new compulsion (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, internet, porn, etc) due to not having dealt with the underlying issue behind the compulsion.

***Please feel free (and safe) to join and discuss any and/all issues you have regarding Transfer Addiction. ***

WE WILL SUPPORT EACH OTHER WITHOUT JUDGEMENT!

You will see that the surgery areas inside you are sprayed with saline washing away the surgical blood to clean the area. And then they pause and watch for leaks. And fix any that appear. Do I say they never happen. NO. They do but it's usually from over-activity after being released. Rather than slowly getting back to your normal sctivities.

Topic: RE: Fl. Medicaid /Medipass Help
I know this is a little late but I also had Medicaid/Share of Cost. I went through Ben David's Office also. They handled everything for me. I went to the seminar in July and had surgery in Dec. They are very good people and help out wherever they can. I will say that getting calls back is not a strong area for them but I was persisent and kept calling them until I got an answer from them. Keep at it, bug them if you have to and you will be happy you did. Good luck on everything. Approval took no time at all. Within a few weeks they had my pre-approval. Your surgery date will be here before you realize.
