Topic: RE: Revision with Macik?
Dr. Macik did my Rou-N-Y three years ago and I have had no problems at all. He is not the most gracious or amiable person to talk to, no great bed-side manner, but seems to be a great surgeon.

Topic: RE: 3 year surgiversary
Just celebrated my third surgiversary! I am still constantly amazed when I walk past a mirror or window and catch a glimps of my reflection. Now, instead of "who is that?" I am just beginning to recognize the "thin" relflection as myself. It is a slow process for the mind to catch up with the body. I now have fewer and fewer people who knew me before surgery not recognizing me. Now it is mostly people who find out about the surgery and tell me they can't believe I was ever that big.

A few things I have learned along the way:

*Protein first is and always will be important.
*Chew, chew, chew.
*Lots of fluids.
*My hair grew back curly and I love it!
*Exercise is alot more fun and eaiser without an extra 135 pounds.
*A good bra is worth the price.
*Good support garments keep the skin from giggling.
*I will always be a fat person inside.
*Head hunger is evil, but at least now I am able to recognize it and know the difference between head hunger and real hunger. (major revalation)
*I can get by on 1000 calories a day and still feel just fine.
*I don't miss carbonated beverages.
*Wine is a quick buzz.
*My husband is now the "jealous type".
*I am grateful for the fact that I don't "dump" but also grateful that I do get sick to my stomach if I intake over 15 grams of sugar at once. it keeps me in check.
*So much easier to find clothes that fit, though I still go straight to the Womens size racks first. Just can't seem to break the habit.
*Calcium causes constipation and heartburn, but gotta have it.
*Too many carbs as one time makes my blood sugar tank a few hours later. (back to protein first)
*I will be forever grateful to have this time as a "normal" person and would do it again in a heart beat!

Topic: RE: X- Post Calling all Macik Patients
Today is my 2 year surgerversary! I have had virtually no problelms and lost 135 pounds in 14 months. It has made me half the woman I used to be, but also twice the woman I used to be! I feel fierce!
One must realize that Macik is not a talker and does not have a great  bedside manner, but he has always answered any question I have asked.  His office staff has always been helpful. When it comes down to it, everyone must make their own decision. I went into surgery with confidence in my surgeon and my ability to succeed. Attitude is everything.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up! I will spread the news.

Topic: RE: Brachioplasty
Down as in "lying in the bed wondering what have I done"? One day.
Sleeping on my back with my arms propped up on pillows, not moving arms much or lifting anything over 5 pounds, 2 weeks.
No baths, oceans, or pools for 6 weeks.
I was released today to start stretching and reaching so I can get my arms over my head and work on full range of motion. It still hurts, don't get me wrong, but it is better every day.
I haven't had anything for pain since surgery but Tylenol, and not even that for the last 5 days.
There have been a few times where I reached "wrong" and it sent a searing pain up my arm and I feared I had ripped something, but Dr. explained that there are several layers of stitches and as they start to dissolve and the skin layers relax, that will go away.
Another thing that may have helped, but of course there is no proof , is taking lots of vitamin C and an herbal supplement called Arnica Montana.
I saved for many years for this surgery, as I pledged to myself that I would never have plastics unless I could pay cash.

Everyone must make there own decision as to how much pain and scars it's worth.

Topic: RE: update on Brachioplasty 9 days
Thanks for all the good feedback. My doctor is Dr. Marisa Lawrence.

http://www.cosmeticsurgery.cc/

Yes, there is a scar running from my elbow to under my breast, but already the difference is amazing. I went for a followup this morning. The swelling is almost gone and there is no bruising. I have been released to start stretching to increase my range of motion. I have to get where I can reach the top of the White Board when school starts on August 8.

LaShelle. There is a procedure where an incision can be made cross ways (front to back) in the arm pit to tighten a small amount of excess skin without the huge extended scar running down the arm. I would have loved to have done this, but alas, I just had too much excess skin.

I will post pics of the incision when the rest of the glue falls off.

For those interested in arm lift.  9 days from surgery. I still have swelling and still having to wear compression garments. Probably will for about 3 more weeks. I am soooo excited.

Congratulations of reaching your goal!

I can totally identify with your feelings of "What's next". I believe it is just the fear of the unknown. I try to be as excited about the "next phase" as I was for the first. I too would have like to have had the surgery 20 years ago, but I have to tell myself that I had to wait until it was "my time". The fact that the mortality rate dropped from 4% 10 years ago to .5% helped too!

I have also heard a lot of "You're not going to lose any more are you?" since about last October when I weighed about 20 more than I do now. I have been holding steady since the first of the year. That has helped with the comments. Though my Dear Husband says he would love to see me gain "10 or so" I am perfectly comfortable where I am. (except for the loose skin) I  still don't recognize myself in the mirror, but when I do see that woman, I like the way she looks.

So don't fear the future! Enjoy the new you!

Thanks for your support. I know you would understand. I am glad you are so young and your skin bounced back so wonderfully! Your most recent pics were grand!

I went for follow up today. Posting pics in my photos.
(Warning!!! Only 5 days out. Not pretty!)

But I can shower now! Yea!

Topic: RE: Brachioplasty
About $6000. for everything. Doctor, hospital, anesthesiologists, nurses, supplies, compression garments, follow ups, etc. She did what is referred to as an Extended Brachioplasty. So she took care of my "back boobs" as well as pulling up some of the loose skin on my stomach. That is why my incision goes from my elbows to below my breast. Just a plain brachioplasty would probably be a little less.
I'll try to take pictures tomorrow at the doctor's office for those who are not faint of heart! I can't wait!

Topic: RE: Brachioplasty
Got my arms done!Dr. Marisa Lawrence at Northside. She does a lot of cancer and breast reconstructions. Really nice.

Since I have tape allergies I had to be wrapped up pretty well. One might think I had work done on my entire upper torso, but not so. I have a line running from my elbows to just under my breast. I am going tomorrow to get the dressings removed and get fitted with compression sleeves. I am so excited to see what they look like.
I had a lot of swelling in my left arm the first night and day after surgery, but I have kept my arms propped above my heart when I sleep and some during the day. There has been some pain, but nothing Tylenol can't handle. Getting dressed is a problem, but daughter and Hubby have stepped in nicely.  I don't know how long before I can raise my arms over my head, but I suspect it will be a while as it has been 4 days and I still can't brush my own hair.
Can't wait for the drains to be removed so I can take a shower.Right now the heat and humidity is making everything itch like crazy.

The wrapping is looking worse by the day! If anyone is interested I will post before and after pics.
I am just so excited I had to share. My family just doesn't understand like you guys do!

Topic: RE: Dr.Paul macik July 22nd

Hello atlhotmom4,

I am a member of the Macik Menagerie! I had RNY in November of '09 and have had very good results. I have followed his instructions to the letter.  I am now in the process of having some plastic surgery done (upper arms) after my 135 pound weight loss.
Don't be discouraged by his lack of good bedside manner. He WILL take the time to answer your questions and make you feel comfortable, but he will not comfort or console you. He is just not a talker.
When you go for follow up appointments you will probably spend most of your time with a nurse, one who has probably had WLS, and then he will come in to talk to you. If you have questions, ask him and he will answer.
Also when ever you have lab work done go ahead and have Macik's office make a copy for you to take with you. Then you won't have to ask to have them faxed over when you go to your regular doctor. Just saves time.
Good luck and I hope things go as well for you as they have for me.
Remember to walk, walk, walk and sip, sip, sip as soon as you can after surgery. Take one day at a time and follow the rules.

I feel AWESOME! Thanks for all the support over the last 20 months!

Thanks LaShelle. A lot of people don't recognize me. It's kind of cool. We were at Tybee Island and it was really nice.
I don't know why I had so much trouble posting in a message.

  Sorry Pic didn't work.

Topic: RE: Swim suit pic for LaShelle
Ok LaShelle. Here is my promised swimsuit picture. It is the first time I have been out "in public" in a swimsuit since surgery 17 months ago. It felt wonderful! I like this picture because it doesn't show how bad my arms are. Which, by the way, will be much smaller this Wednesday as I am having my arms "done" along with the removal of my "back boobs".

Doesn't it feel just AWESOME to be able to accomplish things you never could before? Congratulations on your climb. Keep it up!

Try sucking on some SF Popsicles. It gives you fluids and tastes good too. Popsicles made my new pouch feel better.

Good luck!

Oh LaShelle, you're so good to organize this! I wish I could attend, but alas I will be in preparation for my arm lift (yipee)!

Topic: RE: Had surgery yesterday~ in pain but getting better
Remember to walk, walk, walk, and sip, sip, sip! The body can not heal without fluids. Don't worry about eating, just make sure you don't get dehydrated.
Wishing you a quick and successful recovery!

Topic: RE: Dr. Lincenberg for Lower Body Lift?
I am having my arms done in July by Dr. Marisa Lawrence at Northside Hospital. She was recommended by Dr. Macik. She took a lot of time with me and even agreed to get rid of my "back boobs" at no extra charge since the procedure is not covered by insurance. When I looked at her pictures on the web and in her office I noticed how "neat and straight" her incisions looked as compared to others. She also does a lot of breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
