hi I am researching RNY .  I've read great reviews about the surgery but want to know if any of you have had bad experiences?

I would research research.  I was all ready , I thought, just because I hadn't done equal reading on both the band and RYN.  I went to a place close than, at the time only did RYN and of course it sounded like the thing for me.  It wasn't until I talked to my family dr. and he said I really needed to look at the band.  Oh my gosh,  I am so glad that is what I did.  Now,  I haven't had mine that long to know if I am going to be able to use this tool I now have but I know that since the surgery I am so glad I didn't go with the RYN.  Not that it isn't right for many.  The issues that go with RYN are something I didn't want to deal with.  So talk to places that do both, read read read read. Lots of info out there.  HOpe this helps .  Feel free to ask more????

I have had the RNY, it is has been over two years. I lost more than I thought I would. I have not had any bad events and it has gone very well. It is a process to change your life. The tool, is just that a tool, you have to read the instructions. You have to make life changes and a committment to stay with it the rest of your life. I suggest that you become so informed that you could be an expert on the subject. I did so much research prior to having the RNY, I think I could have done it my self.  Good  luck and don't be affair to ask questions. 

Hi! I don't have any specific experiences(yet) to share with you, but am scheduled for my RNY on 12/20.  I have my concerns about things.....as anyone entering to this process should....but I have researched, and then researched some more and I am confident I am making the right choice for me!  My advice would be to read as much as you can....ask as many questions no matter how ridiculous you think they are.....and then research some more.  I have absolute confidence in my surgeon, and have a great support system in place.  I have to follow what the Dr. says to do, and the rest is up to the Lord.   Best wishes in whatever decision you make.  Crystal

There are reasonably few Dr's that do the DS. The ones that can do it Laparoscopic are rarer yet and few insurance companies will pay for it since it is still considered experimental and its' long term safety has not been proven. This is the reason given by Medicare as for why they will not cover it.

Better Check again...Medicare approves of the DS now and it is not considered "experimental" any more. Alot of people have there insurance cover the DS now. They may have to fight for it and appeal for it but those that do think it was well worth the fight.  I was lucky enough to be able to pay for mine..Best 30,000 dollars I ever spent. There are 2 very well known Dr's that do the DS, that are not to far from here. Dr. Anthone and Dr Sudan, both are from Omaha, Nebraska and Dr Sudan does the DS laproscopic.

Thanks for the heads up....I think. Yes I see that they do cover DS now but I can't seem to find an effective date. Doesn't matter I guess I'm just curious. You see the last time somebody tried to promote weight loss by skipping 70%-80% of somebodies small bowel it worked. They all lost weight. Then about 10 years later 50% of them started dieing of Kidney and/or Liver failure. Nobody ever figured out why. Nobody ever figured out how to know who was at risk. There was a theory. That theory is addressed in the DS but the surgery has not been around long enough in my opinion to prove the kidney and liver issues will not return. I have a guarded amount of faith in Medicare though, so if they approve then the procedure just might be as safe as the rest. I'll do some reading. Obviously I'm a little behind. My opinion of RNY remains unscathed. I would do it again in a second regardless. That's probably because it worked for me and I was as desperate for an answer to weight loss as the next guy. The willingness to excoriate on these boards is sad.

I had RNY Oct5, 2006. I've lost 178lbs. I'm not diabetic, no longer have cardiac issues and a host of other problems that were going to kill me. While I was prepared for complications none came. I have no regrets at all and I would do it again in a second. My wife had the same surgery 3 weeks after I did. She has lost 103lbs and has had no complications either. She has no regrets and has said she would do it again in a second. I must say she looks very good in a size 6! I have spoken with people who have had serious complications who have all said they would do it again as well. I guess it depends on how much lust one has for life.

to all.  Thank you so much for your replies.  It has really helped me.  I did find that Dr.Wanda Kaniewski in Lenexa does lap ds.  What a blessing.  I don't have far to go and hopefully I can have lap.  I've had two c-sections and was cut up and down on both as well as across on the last one.  I don't think I have adhesionsbut I'm not sure.  That could complicate the lap. and I don't know yet if this doctor would do open if it is a problem.  I will find out thought for I have already signed up for her seminar on Jan. 5.  I am self pay and my insurance also says that it will not cover either the weight loss surgery or any complication as a result so I need to be really careful.  Hopefully there won't be any complications.  thanks again, Charlene

Hello again Charlene You might want to consider traveling a couple more hours and check with Dr Anthone up in Omaha. He is one of the leading DS Dr's in the world.  He won't do Laproscopic but he is well worth checking into, especially if you have concerns about adhesions from other surgeries. If you are really wanting it done laproscopic you might want to check with Dr Sudan, who is also in Omaha.

I have looked at the two dotors you suggested but I was worried about aftercare because of the distance.  Do you mind me asking about the cost of their proceedures?  Thanks Charlene

Im not sure about Dr Sudan's price but I payed $29,500 for Dr Anthone and after care  has been done by my own Dr here in Emporia. I had to go back to see Dr Anthone at 3 weeks post-op to get the tubes and stitches removed and then again at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months and now I only need to go see him once a year for follow up and lab work. Its a 4 hour trip from here and my wife and I usually make a long weekend out of it when we go up there. There are so many things to do in Omaha.
