Hi Everyone;

I am hearing rumours that a tummy tuck may be covered for bariatric patients in Manitoba. Is this true?

Does anyone know the details? Is all of it covered or are there any out-of-pocket expenses?

I am assuming that we would need to be referred by our surgeons.

Any info would help.

i was told by my gp that is was covered if you lost 100+lbs and a year out.check with your dr.mine is willing to start the process anytime now,but i have decided to wait for a while for my body to recover from everything that happened this spring

OMG I don't know why but the whole plastics thing terrifies me.  Good thing it's a long way off for me....maybe I can get my head around to it by the time I need to think about it.  Post your journeys so the rest of us can learn.

I have had plastics done post vsg.  It's uncharted waters but it is very traumatic dealing with the vsg and the double procedures i had done here in Manitoba. I am very happy with my results but it has been an uphill battle.  I now am complete.  All I have left is to exercise the remaining little bit of jiggle but  I am D-O-N-E with surgeries! 
Plastics will not be covered unless you are at 100 lbs or more weight loss and even then it is a case by case basis.  I was fortunate.

Hey, how are you doing?  Do you mind me asking what you had done?  We had surgery the same day!!  I am now ready for the removal of the excess skin.  I really need my arms done, boobs lifted and maybe a little tummy tuck.  I was told the tummy would be done under MB health, but the arms and boobs nope!! 

Who did you consult with here in the city?

I started with my GP and was referred from there.  I did my research about which plastics docs are noted for which procedures here in the city.   It really took about 6 months from start to finish, amazing! I can't believe 2 years this October we had our surgery.  So much change it's hard to believe!!

As far as I know, MB Health will cover certain procedures or partial procedures on a case by case basis, and when you are ready this is deterimined by the plastic surgeon. Are the bariatric Drs referring now? The last time I was there, they said they were trying to put some kind of referral program for plastic surgeons for the patients who are longer out from surgery, like us.

Arms and thighs definitely not covered, I was told arms will always have a noticeable scar.

If you don't mind....could you expand on what you experienced with your sugeries?  I am very curious....scared sh*tless but still curious. Thanks

not sure what you mean?  I personally had a vsg, then 18 months later, had plastic surgery ( two procedures at the same time) to deal with the weight loss effects on my body.

I found the experience of losing so much weight, followed by plastic surgery that further changed my body was more traumatic than I expected.  Don't get me wrong, I would never give up the experience for anything.  I have my life back and am living as a size 8, instead of my former size 24. I am grateful for the opportunity I have been given and am making the most of it.  But by making the most of it, there is a lot to deal with.  Nothing to be scared o though, the changes are so positive it is worth it all!

Thanks Fortunada, I had an RNY 7 weeks ago and am doing very well.   Down just under 40 lbs now and feeling a lot better and down 2 clothing sizes.  Although I wasn't scared of the wls and came through it well, I did find that it took a while to get me energy back and I am still not feeling like I am totally recovered yet but do fel pretty good.  My concern or rather curiosity with the plastic surgery is did you feel it was about the same stress on your body as the wls or less or more?  What was your recovery time and experience like?

Plastic surgery was 100 times harder than the wls.  It's comparing laproscopic to being cut and the recovery was much harder and longer.  More time off work and I'm still recovering! It's a long road but worth it
