Thanks so much Madelaine. It's been 14 months in the making and now that it's 3 days away I have to admit I'm a little scared about the surgery. But I think that's normal. I know I will be fine. For all of you who have just started or are in the waiting period of this journey, hang tough. The time truly does pass quickly.

Love reading the posts of you two. I've done so much reading and research but now that the time is coming so near it's nice to hear from people who've had surgery recently. I'm about two weeks behind you both, having VSG in 4 days. Glad to hear that both of you are doing so well.

I personally think that the surgeons want to know that you've made attempts in the past to lose weight with diet and exercise. Some people have done little of either before entering this program and the surgeons need to know you're cabable of doing both. That is the reason they may ask you to lose some pounds before they move you forward in the program. And don't gain any weight between the time that you receive your letter of acceptance until your consult with the surgeon, because you may be asked to lose it before moving forward. I gained 10 pounds and was told I had to lose it before my meeting with the NUT. Thankfully I did....I'm not sure what would have happened if I didn't.

I'm sure the wait times have changed in the last year however for me this is how it went:
February 2011 - Received letter of acceptance
August 2011 - Received letter informing me of group session and consult with surgeon.
Sept. 2011 - Group session and consult.
Oct. 2011 - Barium swallow and physical with my family physician
Nov. 2011 - Meeting with NUT
Dec. 2011 - Meeting with psychologist
February 21, 2012 - Surgery!!!!!!

Yes, surgery in Manitoba is covered. But you do have to pay for the meeting with the psychiatrist...$150 and $200 for the meetings with the nutritionist.

I didn't really want to bring up the subject of catheters but I'm going to anyway. I've never had to have one, and don't really want one, but it seems the message boards are mixed on this issue. For those of you that had surgery in MB, did you have one? Just wondering if it's normal procedure here.

I'm sure most of the people here have felt how you're feeling at one time or another. In the big picture of things,whether it be a 12 month or 20 month wait it's really not that bad. Before the surgery was offered here, a friend of mine had to wait 4 years to go and have it done in Medicine Hat. The surgeons have your referral and it's all in their hands now. I'm sure within the next 8 - 12 months the ball will start rolling and once it does the time goes by very fast.
Although sometimes difficult, I do believe an opitimistic attitude makes all the difference. Try not to let food be your crutch in the coming months while you wait to hear from the surgeons. You don't want to gain weight during this time as that may just put the surgery back another month or two if you are asked to lose the weight before proceeding forward in the program.
From start to fini**** will be a 14 month wait time for me. Looking back now, the time has gone quickly. Keep your chin up, the end result will be worth the wait.

I'm not sure what my 'last meal' will be 2 weeks from tonight, but I highly doubt broccoli or any other healthy veggie will be on the menu. I'm thinking some totally awful carb-laden meal, like pasta or thick-crust loaded pizza, or a mound of mashed potatoes smothered in gravy. Berries for dessert sounds good too, but mine will probably be in the form of a topping on the cheesecake I plan on eating.
Funny though, I really thought I'd be eating everything bad in sight when I got the call last week that my surgery was booked, but I really haven't been.

I got the call! Andrea called me this afternoon to let me know I have a date. I start the Optifast on February 7th and my surgery date is February 21 with Dr. Andrew!! To say I'm ecstatic would be an understatement.

omg...you poor thing. What a terrible phone call to receive. I wonder if and how many others received the same call. That bubble filled with anticipation, only to have it burst. Stay positive, everything happens for a reason, and the surgery will be here sooner than you know it.
