Post Date: 12/8/11 6:54 am Well, I've been lurking, not posting alot, as those who will remember me will remember some of the issues I've been through to get WLS. My last update was that I was finally approved after waiting 7 years to see Dr B, but my approval came to late for me to go see Dr B in Moncton, as we were posted, and our house sold, and a new job waiting for me here in Winnipeg.
I had resigned myself to another waiting list, and as soon as I was settled here in August, I got the base here to send me in another referral to a surgeon in this area. I really lucked in, my referal went to a private clinic here in Winnipeg, I was contacted in October for my first appointment with them, had to go see their shrink, dietician, ect. But got my Lap-Band two days ago. My surgery was still covered, by my health-care provider, but apparently there is no wait list for a private clinic, and DND has special coverage for this particular clinic (its in a MALL...lol). Tho most pers who go there have to pay for surgery themselves.
Their pre-op diet here is more restrictive, 690 cals a day, on something called SlimTime. Two shakes and one bar a day. I lost 10 lbs the first week, and the dietician told me she didn't want me to lose more than that, so put me on two cups of non-starchy veggies a day for the last week.
Its a bit surreal for me at the moment, they fixed a hiatus hernia while in there, I still can't believe after waiting almost 8 years, I've finally got a chance to be a healthier me. I was originally planning on a lap band when I first went to see Dr B, as I knew I wasn't going to be around for fills, ect, being a military family. We had decided to do the RNY. HOwever, after getting here, and talking to the surgeon who did my surgery, I went back to lap-band, as he said alot more GP's are getting trained on Lap-band fills, ect. Plus, I will be stuck here for atleast 5 years, and he stated that 80% of patients don't require adjustments after the two to three year mark.
I would like to say thanks to all those who have the courage to share your stories, the good and the bad, its a huge help to those like me. I miss NB alot, and really don't like this province much, but am making the best of it. Its certainly not HOME. LOL. With any luck, I will be back in NB in 5 yrs or so.
Cheers to all!!
