Hi I am just starting to look into surgery. I haven't talked with a surgeon yet. I have BC/BS Blue Options. My BMI is somewhere between 39/40. I am about 5'6 1/2" and 250. When I calculated BMI I can't use the 1/2 in. If I use 5'6" my BMI is 40, if I use 5'7" my BMI is 39. I have depression, shortness of breath, arthritis. Not sure what else I have that is considered. I am so worried I will not qualify. So I was wondering if anyone had experience similar to mine or new much about BC/BS. I plan to call a surgeon this week. TIA Brandie

Hi Brandie, Im not familiar with bcbs practices, but when this happens to others I know, (this sounds bad) they gain some weight on purpose. Or if you have any other co-morbitites like high bp, sleep apnea, diabeties, etc. Good Luck!! ps. Rocky Mt is the "Mayberry" town right??? Erica

I have BCBS. Blue Options is the PPO which is what I have. I know the PPO requires a BMI of 40 or greater with no commorbidities, but they will still consider approval for a BMI of 39 with commorbidities. It sounds like you have a few, but list anything like swelling in your legs or back pain for example. My plan is based in Arkansas though, not North Carolina and they might have different requirements. You may just want to call and ask them. One thing that I love about BCBS is that not once have they asked me for my name until AFTER I've explained why I'm calling and nine times out of ten they will answer my questions without asking for my name. All the other insurance plans I've had will get your life history first and then you're afraid they are making notes as you talk. I've found BCBS to be forthcoming and willing to give information and they were fantastic about approval. At the time of my first appointment, my BMI was 44 with minor commorbidities like shortness of breath and borderline high blood pressure. It took a week to get approval. Good Luck! (oh...also ask them if your employer has any limitations or restrictions...after I was approved and had to call them for information I was informed that there was a $5000 limitation on coverage, but when I questioned that they said, "Oh, your employer is the only one in Arkansas that doesn't limit coverage.")

Brandie, First may I say....DONT gain weight on purpose...they look at a history of obesity...not just your weight now. Secondly...get a new accurate height somewhere..you may not be what you think. Your health problems may not qualify you for BCBS but your weight may. I was exactly a BMI of 40...I had lost a few pounds before seeing the surgeon. Do you have any sleep problems? Borederline high blood pressure? Have you had your blood sugar checked? Is you arthritis in your knees??.has it been documented by a healthcare provider? Do you have GERD? Do you have problems with your bladder leaking? These may all be problems you need to talk to your surgeon about...are they documented on a chart somewhere? If you are having any of these problems see a doctor, PA or NP about them now and get them documented. I also think yur surgeon would go by the 5-6 height.. Susan 233/137/133 5-4 1/2 chart said 5-4

Brandie: OK here it goes - I have BCBS also. It all depends on your last 5 year weight history. You must have been a BMI 40 or greater for the past 4 out of 5 years. You can also be considered with a BMI of 35 or greater with comorbility such as hypertension (on medication) or sleep apnea for the past 4 out of 5 years. Go the www.bcbsnc.com and at the top of the website type in gastric bypass. Click on 2. surgery for morbid obesity and it will show you all the information and requirements you must meet for approval of insurance coverage. GOOD LUCK - hope this answers all your questions.

Hi. I have BCBS of NC (PPO) and BCBS Federal. I have a BMI of 41-43 (depending where I look and if I use 5' 3 or 5'4- I always said 5'4 but the pulmonologist measured me and said I was 5' 3 3/4"- LOL). Over the last 5 years I have ranged between 36-40 (again depending where I look, which height I use and what year (or sometimes month)- I was a yo-yo dieter). I was just diagnosed with sleep apnea in Jan (06). I was gestational diabetic in 2003. Had weight stemmed depression since 2000. When I decided to try to get WLS, I was worried because my BMI hasn't been 40 for all 5 years nor have I had the sleep apnea for the 5 years. My surgeons office said that it wouldn't matter and they still assured I would have no problem getting approved. So, here we are...waiting to see if I get approval. Got all my appts finished and I saw the surgeon & insurance lady on Friday and she said she would call first, sometimes they approve over the phone, but if not then she would send in the paperwork. I am a nervous wreck waiting, especially since my surgery is scheduled for 3-23.

Thanks for all the info. Susu, thanks for that info. Who is your doctor? I am worried because I am at my highest weight. I have not been at 40 for 5yrs. I have probably been from 35-40. I have lost a little and gained more, back and forth. I have arthritis, depression, shortness of breath. Probably other things, but haven't been checked for them. I am high rish for diabetes because of my weight and PCOS. PCOS is the reason I have gained so much in the last 8yrs and can't loose easily. Plus I still have the eating habbits of when I was small. Anyway thanks for all the info. If I do not have a 5yr weight history what will they do? I plan on contacting the surgeon this week.
