Minor setback - still positive!!

Hi all!

So, after meeting my surgeon and signing all consent forms, the surgeon informed me that she is concerned about my history of depression.

I've always been honest with the WMC about my depression. After I first started the process with them in early 2015, I suffered a bout of recurrent Major Depressive Disorder and took some time off from the process. I went back to regular counseling and started an anti-depressant. After about 12 months, I felt very stable and contacted the WMC to re-instate my file.

From there I have completed 2 classes, had a re-assessment, and visits with nutritionist/behaviourist. I continued to be open about my history of depression and the staff had no concerns.

During the visit with the surgeon, she said she needed a letter from my GP or Social Worker to confirm that I received treatment. Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why she would want to confirm this and I have no issue with that. I am just annoyed that it has taken 6 months+ for this request from them! I have seen my GP 3 times in that period and could've gotten whatever info they needed.

So, I have an appointment with my GP next week, and once the WMC has the letter they requested I will get a surgery date. Still optimistic and excited!

This won't make you have to go to the back of the line.  The same happened to me regarding treatment for Ulcerative Colitis.  They could have asked for the letter, but waited until just before booking surgery.  It is all just part of getting ducks in a row with the most up to date info.

You will have a surgery date before you know it.

Thanks for your reply.

The clinic did say it won't affect anything other than being able to schedule my surgery date.

I guess I was disappointed because I thought the WMC team had reviewed everything and gave me the stamp of approval, so when I went in to that appointment with surgeon I was very excited and happy. It is a minor delay in the grand scheme of things.

Sounds like a small technicallity as they are dotting their i's and crossing their t's.in the paperwork category.

I had a previous major depression diagnosis as  well, at the time I was going through the process it wasn't an issue, but it's understandable that they should make sure you are stable as this is a stressful ordeal.

I was actually told that depression issues are pretty much a standard in most WLS patients, they would be likely shocked if you claimed you didn't have any. Lol

This happened to me too, and I had been fine and off antidepressants and out of therapy for over 5 years at the time.  I had to get my psychiatrist to fill out forms and I got him on his last day at work before he retired.  He was very happy for me that I was considering gastric bypass, very supportive. I don't remember if he had to do a letter as well.  It didn't cause me to wait any longer but was another hurdle to jump over.  I was lucky because if would have waited a few more days to call, he would have been gone!

sounds like you have a great positive attitude.  the good thing is that they are being thorough and you know that when they do finally do the surgery, it is absolutely medically right!!!  Keep up the great attitude.

I am sure you will have your date before you know it. It is a good reminder to people who have other medical issues to get letters from their specialists or GP regarding the. When I went through I sent TWH a copy of my sleep apnea test and a letter from my cardiologist. They did not ask for them but I figured the more info they have the smoother it would be.
