Surgery date June 13, Sleeve or not to Sleeve

Finally got Surgery Date, always intended on having RNY however surgeon said because I'm on 81mg aspirin he would do Sleeve unless I get note from Doctor that I can go off aspirin. I've contacted Doctor and that should not be a problem but now I'm wondering if Sleeve might be best option. Less potential complications, I'm sure I can stick with the plan and even though RNY loss is higher at start from what I've read Sleeve at 2 years out is same. I've never been a binge or severe overeater and sweets always limited. Any thoughts appreciated.

Hey Camperguy,

Congratulations on your surgery date! It's funny because I am totally the opposite... I went into this thinking "how am I going to convince the surgeon to do sleeve on me" and I even have a whole document of my reasons! But as I've been learning, I think RNY is right for me. I've decided, since I have no clue, to leave it up to the surgeon. I also spoken to my family doc and a couple of my specialists about it

That is not to say I think RNY is right for you! I have zero opinion of one surgery being better than the other. I used to! But as I have been learning, I've learned they are both amazing tools... and in either case, we still have to do all the hard work.

Your long term health is the most important. Pick the right surgery for you today, and for tomorrow. Ask lots of questions about your health. And most of all, trust yourself to do the right surgery for the right reasons. You've come this far. Congratulations!

Oh... and btw, my reason for RNY is GERD. I hear it is way worse with sleeve, and I can't risk that. My main concern with RNY was NSAIDs for migraines, but my neurologist has assured me of an alternative. :)

Some surgeons allow them and others feel no WLS patients should ever take them again.

As for having a sleeve or RNY, I'd go with what the surgeon suggested unless you feel strongly about the other surgeon. I have friends that have been sleeved for years and they lost well and have kept it off. Regardless of surgery, you have to work it to see results.

I was sleeved on March 15 of this year.

Since its seems you have somewhat of a choice in your surgery, I recommend (if you haven't) research both surgeries, and perhaps if you can take another medication, talk to your family doctor about the two surgeries ( I realize they are not experts in the surgery) but they know your medical history well and maybe able to offer you more insight

Yes, you will lose faster with the RNY, although there are always exceptions, I've seen some fast weight losses with VSGers too. However if you go by averages, yes it takes sleevers longer for the most part, but it all averages out down the road.

If your not bothered by a slower weight loss, (although your still going to lose a lot in the first few months plus, just because you can't eat that much), then its a worth considering.

I'm 9 weeks post op, and I have lost 37lbs since surgery and 53 lbs since opti. I am allowed Nsaids. I think it does vary between surgeons about NSAID usuage. I think generally in Ontario the idea you have the sleeve outside of other medical reasons, is regarding the inability to get off NSAIDs.

I'm very happy that I had the sleeve done. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I know there aren't a tonne of sleevers on this forum, at least that I'm aware of. You could also check out the VSG forum on this website to get more insight.

At the end of the day if your happy with either surgery, go by your surgeon's recommendation, they know best!

Good luck to you!
