Prenatal vitamins-PregVit

Hi,

I just heard about a prescription prenatal vitamin called PregVit.

Has anyone been prescribed this for their daily supplement, especially from the Guelph surgeons? Or anyone else using it?

I know my benefits would cover it, which is cool...

I use the Costco brand as of now, 2.5 years out.

Thanks!

Hi Solstice,

I havent had surgery yet, but I asked at our Nutrition class and they said it was fine. Im with TWH. If I dont have to pay for so many different vitamins and can save a few bucks I am all for it. I am sure it will be fine, but no harm in speaking with your clinic to confirm :)

I think the policy may have changed recently at TWH. I emailed my nutritionist about it back in June, and she said that they had discussed it and were not recommending it because the Folic Acid is too high, which could mask a B12 deficiency. So maybe talk to someone in Guelph to see what their policy is?

Hi Kaylar,

There are 2 different kinds of Pregvit, One is just the regular and the second one is Pregvit Folic 5. I'm wondering if thats the one they say not to use.

This is helpful Candi, thanks. I did notice when I did do a web search it was high in Folic Acid.

Did not know there were 2 types available though.

I will check with the clinic, and my family doc too.

Solstice,

It looks like the regular one is 1.1 of Folic and the other one is 5 of Folic, hence the name Pregvit Folic 5. Hopefully we all get some answers :)

She didn't specify. I didn't know there were two, so I just asked about "pregvit," but from what I'm seeing online it looks like 1g is the cap, which would make 1.1 too high.

"You should not get more than 1,000 micrograms of folic acid a day, unless your doctor prescribes a higher amount. Too much folic acid can hide signs that you lack vitamin B12, which can cause nerve damage." From https://www.womenshealth.gov/a-z-topics/folic-acid under "Can I get too much Folic Acid?"

I guess that's why it's prescription only in the first place.

Thanks for all your input!

I spoke to a nurse at the Guelph clinic today and she said that the dietitians are aware of PregVit and are ok with it. She told me to talk to my family doc about it for the script.

I see the trio at Guelph for my annual in late November, and she said that would be good to try it for 3 months, then when bloodwork is done early in November, they can see if all is well.

I am seeing the family doc tomorrow about this, so hopefully he will agree with me, he has been really good about all this so far. Only has one other patient who has had this surgery (small town living!)

Hi there,

Just looked up Pregvit in here and came upon this thread. Did any of you end up taking it and if so how has it worked for you? Did your bloodwork turn out ok?

Thanks :)
