    Hi,

My name is Nancy and I have been reading posts on the NB and NS forums.  I was wondering if there were any other Islanders or PFA out there doing the same?

I have been referred to Dr. Ellsmere in Halifax for VSG, and I know I am in for a long wait (based on what I have read on the other forums.

    Just wanted to say hello.

    Hi Nancy,

How are you doing? I'm glad to see another islander on here. I'm also waiting for my first appointment but my referral is with Dr. Savorie.  Anyway, just wanted to say Hi, and let you know that this a good place to learn and research anything you want to know about WLS..

    Hi,

Thanks for posting.  I was feeling so alone!!  So are you having the lapband?

How long does it take to see Dr. Savoie?  Is he in Moncton?

Let me know how you are getting along.

    Nancy

     Hi Nancy,

Im an islander as well.  Im sure there are lots of us out there.  I am seriously considering having the VSG.  I was on a waiting list for years and finally gave up.  I ended up loosing over 100 lbs on my own and now i am struggling to loose the next 100 lbs.  I have recently gained 25 lbs and realize that i need help.  I am not willing to wait years to have this done so i am thinking of heading to Mexico and foot the bill myself.  How long have you been waiting for your procedure?

    Hi Island Guy,

Sorry I didn't respond sooner,  I didn't get an e-mail that you had posted.

My Dr. sent the referral to NS back in the Spring.  I haven't seen or heard anything from them......Somone said they had patients for the next 5 years....so I'm doubtful I will get an invite to an info. session (I understand that is the next step).tt  I am also seriously considering travelling to Mexico for my surgery.  My husband and sister don't want me to.  Of course I would prefer to have it done in Hfx and have lots of after care - but I could be dead from being m.o. by then....

I'm just having a hard time picking a Dr.  there are positives & negatives for all of them.  Almanza is definetly the cheapest - and some of his patients love him and the facilities, others tell horror stories.

Then for more money you have lots of other choices....Dr. Joya in P.V,. has a hotel for after care that looks like a great spot for vacation....so I'm really undecided.

How about you?  Have you made any decisions in the last few months?

    Take care,

    Nancy

Well Im doing great.  I had my surgery in Mexico on Dec 18th 2009 by Dr Almanza.  I have the # of a great coordinator (and a good friend of mine) that can help you with info.  Dr.  Almanza is awesome.  The way i look at it is.... the mexican Doctors are doing 3-4 of these surgeries per day where doctors in the maritimes and Canada for that matter are fighting for enough ER time to do 3-4 of these per month!!  I was extremely happy with my surgery and got amazing care while i was down there.  When you compare the cost it is an amazing deal.  I had a good friend of mine travel down with me (he's a doctor) and he was very impressed with the talent of the doctor.  They even let him watch the surgery.  If your truly considering Mexico drop me a personal line and il answer all your questions.  Im Down 30 lbs since Dec 18th and i think this this thing is the best thing that any obese person can do for yourself.  Especially if your a volume eater (which i was).  Let me know if you have any questions.

hi there, I am also from PEI, and I have been wanting to have lap band surgery for the last 5 years.  I have been on Dr. Beausoliel's list since 2007.  I have called the reception back in June of 2009 and I was about the 14th down the list,  I called yesterday Jan 26, 2010 and I am still about 13-14th on the list.  Does anyone know if the wait time in Bathurst is less?

    Hi Kelly,

You have had a long wait so far - I wonder why they haven't made any progress since June.

I haven't kept up on the wait times for lapband as I'm sure that VSG is the surgery for me.  I certainly wish you well and hope that you will move up more quickly on the list.

It seems a shame that more people aren't doing WLS when there is such a high demand, and such a cost (health care, disability, personal, family) to obesity.

    Take care and good luck,

    Nancy

    Hello Kelly,

I am new to this forum, I too am from PEI. My reason for wanting to get surgery done is because I have been trying to conceive for over 6 yrs and my specialist has told me that my weight is probably paying a big factor in me not being able to conceive. I just called today to see if it is covered under the PEI government, they told me it is. I noticed you have been waiting a long time for your surgery, why is that?. Is there something I can do before I talk to my dr next week about getting surgery done that could help expedite my surgery. Where are you getting your's done. If you dont mind me asking why did you pick lap band surgery compared to other weight lose surgeries (sleeve, gastric etc).

    Thanks,

Hi, I haven't waited as long but I have enter almost a year wait..I was told Dr. Sarvoies list wasn't that long so I figured I would have atleast had my first consult. But as I read the post for NS and NB there is still alot of people waiting.. To bad there isn't a doctor here on the island that would do the less abrasive surgeries like lapband or VSG. But even gastric bypass isn't as involved as it was 15-20 years ago....Well hopefully we will all get moving closer to a healthier life. I'm glad to see people here from the island, was thinking I was the only one waiting for WLS..take care all..look forward to keeping in touch.

    hey Island Guy
How are things going?  How is the weight loss?

    Nancy,
Have you heard anything back from any of the doctors?

I am looking into getting my lapband done at Slimband ( formely known as Toronto Laprascopic Banding Company  - TLBC).  It is 16000 cost.    They have a 4 year post op program.
I have been looking at the mexico Doctors and I was a little fearful.   I know that Island Guy went and had VSG done there.   Island Guy, could you tell us a little more about your experience?

Does anyone know of anyone else that has had lapband one.  I know of one other person on PEI and she went to slimband.

    Kelly

    Hi Kelly,

I haven't heard a peep from Halifax...I was ready to book Mexico for VSG but when my family found out they were so worried and upset I couldn't do it.  I know it is my body, my choice, and I know I am an adult and don't need their permission or approval.  However, I also don't want everyone stressing out about me.  I figure I'll give them a bit more time to get used to the idea.

Plus we will be moving at the end of June.  My husband left in the middle of Nov. so I'm responsible for the house showings, the kids, etc.  I started a new job in Ottawa and I'm doing some travelling back and forth - so I'm not sure this is the best time.  It is hard to wait......

I mentioned Mexico to my family Dr. she said she thinks it is better to have surgery in the US & Canada.  She also said that she knew I could lose the weight (since I have 2ce before) - but felt I need to have it done where I would have ongoing support.  So I'm thinking of that as well.

Glad to hear from you.  Let us know how you get along.

    Nancy

    Hey Nancy,

I am really thinking of getting it done by Slimband since they have a  4 year post op program.  Whi*****ludes the fills.  If you are moving to Ottawa, it is closer than PEI and they would have someone in Ottawa to do the fills.  For the price difference and the extra support I would really consider having it done in Canada.  I think that just getting the band is not goiing to do everything.  They said to me the band will do 50% of the work and the other 50% is diet and exercise.
We have started a facebook group for slimband clients.  If you ever consider doing it in Canada let me know and maybe you would like to join our facebook group.  Great support there and people tell you how it really is.

When do you think you will be moving?
    Kelly

    Hi Kelly,

We will be moving at the end of June once my oldest graduates from HS.

I have ruled out the band but I appreciate the offer to join the facebook group.

After doing my research I haved decided the only surgery I would consider is the verticle sleeve.  On the VSG forum there are a number of people who switched from band to Sleeve because they had problems.  I know there are lots of people who have had success with the band but its not for me.

Once I'm in Ontario I'll have to see what options are available.  I know Dr. Christou does the sleeve for 22,000 but I really don't see myself taking out a loan to pay that much.

Keep me posted, hopefully you will get a date soon.

    Nancy
