Abnormal EKG!!!

I called my physician's office today to see if they would be sending over my release for surgery.
Then I was told that my EKG came back abnormal so 'they' are not sure if I will be cleared or not....

Should I go to another doctor? It bothers me that they couldn't tell me what my abnormal EKG meant....

I am upset and want to cry. I had an EKG back when I was pregant with my daughter less than a year ago and it was perfectly fine. I am relatively young (late 20's and still move around a lot).

Now I am concerened I won't be cleared for surger and even worse that there might be something wrong with my heart. But if there is something wrong with my heart, won't they tell me to loose weight? If so then guess what---- I NEED the surgery in order to be sucessful in doing so.

Has anyone else had an abnormal EKG and still get cleared for surgery from their primary care physician?

I am so pissed----the longer this gets put off the longer I am going to have to wait and I don't want this weight on me any longer than it has to be.

They won't tell you what was abnormal about it?  Won't tell you what it means or what you should do next, if you need more tests or need to see a specialist?  I would have a real problem with that.  I would call back and insist on speaking with your doctor.

I don't know if you should go to another doctor.  I guess if your current doctor refuses to give you information about your EKG, you would have to... but I don't think it is likely that will refuse to give you the information.  Depending on what's wrong, you may need to see a specialist.

Try not to panic yet.  It may be something relatively minor and it might not interfere with your surgery at all.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

They could not tell me what it possibly meant and then when I asked if they would clear after I got a good report from the cardiologist she stated she could not tell me that! What the heck???!!!!

I had an abnormal ekg  too...it was no big deal, but it had to be sorted out before I could be cleared for surgery.  It only took about a week or two.  I went to a cardiologist who did an echocardiogram to get a better look.  Apparently I have a very small, very commom heart murmur that can show up on an ekg.  He said if I had no issues with it up until now, I probably never would and cleared me for surgery.  So, just follow up and see what happens:)

It could even be something as simple as a bad machine or inexperienced technician.  I had that happen to me at an out-patient clinic several years ago, ended up in the ER with a perfectly good EKG on another machine.  You may be able to request the first doc do one more.

I went through the same thing about a week before my surgery was scheduled.  Ended up having to have an Echo Cardiogram and a CT Scan of my heart.  Everything was fine, and I had my surgery on time.

I had one, too. It delayed my surgery date a little while. I, too, had to have an echocardiogram and everything turned out normal. They have to make sure before surgery. Good luck!

I had an EKG in my primary care doctor's office last year, not for the purposes of WLS but because I had gone in for a visit due to not feeling well and they heard a heart murmur (which had never been detected before). The EKG was abnormal and I was sent to a cardiologist where the EKG was repeated. The cardiologist agreed that the EKG was "abnormal" but he said that the abnormality in the readings on the test was due to my large chest and that overall I was normal and healthy from a heart standpoint and that the murmur was benign, probably surfacing in the face of sub-therapeutic thyroid replacement and a viral illness.

"Abnormal" can obviously mean lots of things, I hope your case turns about to be something simple and that you get the answers you need!

"It bothers me that they couldn't tell me what my abnormal EKG meant...."

Couldn't or wouldn't? If they couldn't even figure out why it as abnormal maybe you really should try a different doctor. LOL

If it's a case of "wouldn't"...that's illegal. Your doctor can't NOT give you info about your medical condition or treatment.
