This may seem silly but as I wait for insurance approval I've lost weight..and i've went from a 42 to a 39 BMI.

I know i'm just stressing but can losing weight before surgery cause the surgeon to say NO even with insurance approval? My work pants are falling off me and if approved I'm sure ill lose another 10 or so lbs on the pre op diet ( 5'9 265lbs currently)

My RNY is scheduled for 2/28...  and i've lost weight during my six month supervised diet and my insurance already approved me.   My pre-op liquid diet starts on 2/21 and i'm sure i'll loose more...  i'm down for that...  anything to help the process.   Good Luck to you.

Thank you so much . Your response put be at ease a little. I'm just worried because with my diabeties out of control i am able to lose 40lbs in a month with out trying..due to high sugar and contant thirst and peeing.  I just didnt want them to think "hey..she can lose weight on her own why approve her" when losing the weight the way ive been losing it isnt ideal and very unhealthy.

Nope, your surgeon will use a weight that will qualify you. I was worried about that also and I got approved easily. You list your BMI as a 39, most insurances qualify using a BMI of 35 with another issue ie sleep apnea, diabetes, etc. a BMI of 40 or above and you automatically qualify. So, don't worry about it, it will all be ok.

If you are already approved it shouldnt matter. I am the other end, I have been on meal replacement shakes - 3 a day for 7 days and have not lost any weight, hmmmph. NO cheating, I swear. I do have french vanilla in my coffee cream, thats it. Help me God, my Dr says I have to lose 21 pounds and thats only another 2 weeks..... Im hoping for a big drop soon. Keep up the good work, I guess I am STILL a BAD loser!

Your surgeon needing you on a liquid diet to shrink your liver is one thing, disqualifing you for weight loss surgery because you can't lose weight is another thing entirely!  That logic escapes me and makes me nuts to hear it!

I think it depends on the surgeon. i was told if my BMI dropped below the requirements then i wouldn't qualify.

I wondered the same thing. I believe that the weight that is sent to the insurance company is your very first weigh in. Either from your first appoitment with the surgeons office or the weight from your nutrition seminar.

If they go by that my BMI was 42. so that would work in my favor...i guess my concern is the conflicting paper work from recently that lists my weight as lower at different appts.

We (Kaiser) had to qualify early on in the process and then were put on pre-surgery diet and had to lose a set amount of weight before we would get a surgery date.  Now that I have reached to goal weight and have a surgery date (3/26), I have to stay below that goal weight.  Kind of nerve wracking but also keeps me motivated to keep on the new eating plan.  Everyone's experience seems different.  Good luck!

Wow !  I wish you much success because those are a lot of hoops you had to go through.

I just needed (with UHC and BCBS) to do a 3month supervised diet..psych visit...pylori test and just meet the BMI requirments.

I needed a co- morbidity which was sleep apnea. After 7 weeks my BMI has dropped to 31! Your surgeon will work with you!
