I joined a gym in Annapolis where I live and I signed up for barre classes and the trx classes. I went to my first barre class on Tuesday and loved it. However, I did not like my body because I felt huge next to all the other women. At work, I am complemented every day by my kids and the staff and I have felt great. I had no idea that I would be so self concious in that class. I am going again tonight and hope in time that I feel as good about myself at the gym as I do when I am out and about. I guess looking in the mirror at the class really bothered me!

The thing to remember about the gym is that everyone is there for the same reason and most people don't really pay attention to anything else.

Keep at it and put in an honest effort and you will start to feel better about being there.

Finding an exercise format that you enjoy is the key at follow through, don't worry about what others think.  Worry about how you feel and those who care about you.

High five for going to the gym. Exercising in front of other people is one of my fears even though I know most people are so self absorbed I could be doing naked cartwheels and no one would notice.

it isn't self absorbed it is focused.  Those who are self absorbed are the ones who will notice because they think they are better.

I am friends with one of the people at my gym and we rarely notice eachother, and neither of us are self absorbed.

Not trying to slam you, Paul, by saying self absorbed. I meant only that they are not paying attention to others' looks.

Yoga class intimidated me when I used to look in the windows and saw all the skinny minnies.  Then I actually took a class and my perceptions changed.  You are literally in your own mat world and not worried about ANYONE else.  You lose concentration and end up face planting!  :)

When I took my first spin class last year, i was the biggest person in the room. I was so embarassed I didn't go back. Now I do boot camp and take 2 spin classes a week.

Everyone is right. Nobody cares. We're all at the gym for the same reason. We all have a goal to reach.

I take Zumba classes and at first I felt stupid thinking I looked like an idiot.  and then I realized how much I paid attention to the teacher and not the 30 people around me.  it then occurred to me that everybody else is doing the same thing

You may wanna look for a laugh :)

At my gym, I am often one of the largest people there, and it has been that way since I was 390lbs. Do I care? Nope, cuz I'm doing something FANTASTIC- working out! Focus on the burn, not the body- that will come.

Good Luck,

You can get samples of my favorite Protein drink About Time Birthday Cake flavor here: www.shopabouttime.com/ProductDetails.asp It has ZERO carbs, gluten, sugar, fat, lactose, artificial sweeteners but it's absolutely delicious!!! I don't work for them, but I want them to stay in business forever- as I need these! :)

First of all hugs for feeling this way and congrats for getting up and moving. I think you need to find a gym that is the right fit for you. I joined a family gym and found the people so supportive of my weight loss efforts. It wasn't what is that fat chick doing in here it was way to go and what can I do to help you.....suggestions on footwear for spin, a great protein drink for after class, and just a overall high five type of attitude after class. You will need to go a couple times people will be supportive and remember it might take a few different classes before you find your perfect fit.
Those mirrors should be your biggest inspiration.  Look at how far you have come and watch yourself shrink before your very eyes!

I really like my gym, it has a very serene atmosphere not competitive! I love the classes and know in time, I will watch myself transform.

Thanks everyone!
