How common are strictures? Do you have to be put out for this? Thanks!

I had 3 strictures in two months. They put you into a twilight sleep and though you aren't completely knocked out you do not remember/feel anything. The worst part (for me) was the goo that they made me swallow to numb my throat. Some doctors use a spray, which isn't as bad.
