Caffiene?

Why aren't we supposed to have caffiene? No one really explained it to me I was just told it was a no-no.
Caffeine interferes with the absorption of calcium and tannins, found in tea, coffee (decaf or not) inhibits the absorption of iron

You'd need to ask your surgeon, or whomever advised you not to have it.

There are a number of reasons why caffeine is not really healthy.  It may irritate the stomach lining or aggrevate a developing ulcer.  It can cause difficulty sleeping.  It interferes with the absorption of some nutrients, including calcium.

Personally, I don't see a problem with it in moderation.

my nut told me its because caffience makes you pee more, thus robbing your body of the fluid you badly need.. especially early on

The Mayo Clinic and several other sources disagree with your nutritionist.

I was told that an 8 oz serving of regular coffee per day is fine. Believe me, if I did not have my daily morning cup of coffee, I think that my husband would leave me! lol I can get pretty pissy without it! When I am grumpy and it is about 2pm in the afternoon my husband will calmly ask, "did you forget your coffee this morning?" Then I think about it and sure enough, I got so busy in the morning that I totally forgot to have my cup of Joe.
I have given up soda 6 months prior to surgery, I have never smoked, I used to drin****asionally (no more), I have also given up on refined sugars and I do not eat any frozen or canned fruits or vegetables since surgery. I have been living a very "clean" life and our food that we purchase and prepare at home is made with whole grains, grass fed proteins and a lot of water so I do not feel bad about ingesting my 1 8oz serving of coffee with soy milk added.
If it makes life easier for you to have a cup of coffee then I say go for it!  You have to have at least one guilty pleasure!
My NUT  said it can also increase ones appetite.  I don't remember being hungrier when I use to consume a lot of caffeine.  It did make my heart race.  I only have an occasional tea since RNY.  I actually prefer ice cold water.

My doctor told me it increases appetite, too. I drink tons of it, though, and it does not seem to increase mine. It's my only real vice.

I don't recall my surgeon nor my NUT advising against it...and even if they had/did, it is advice that I would have opted to not heed....there is simply no way that I am "giving up" my morning and afternoon cofffee....I've made wholesale changes in virtually all aspects of my life (for the better, to be sure) but this is one change that, at this point, anyway, doesn't need to be made...

Everyone is entitled to my opinion...

Have green tea, yes has cafine but helps burn fat  and My NUT says much better than coffee and more natural

I was told I can have caffeine up to a year out. I go psycho if anyone tries to take away my coffee lol But even before my surgery coffee actually decreases my appetite and it does the same now. But I do suggest that if you have coffee or tea to just up your water.

I was told no caffiene for the first 3 to 6 months, but after that in moderation was fine. I drink maybe 4 - 6oz of coffee a day. Really I make myself a cup in the morning, then drink about half of it and then forget about the rest, then it's cold and i have to dump it. LOL. So yeah. prob. less than 6 oz. a day.

I am 3 months out and my papers from the nut. say Tea or Coffee but nothing about decaf. Water and Crystal Light hurt my stomach so I drink regular ice tea all day everyday and have had no problems. All the labs came back very good last week and I have lost 91 lbs this first 3 months. Every Dr. is different though.

My research revealed that the caffeine in one cup of regular coffee inhibits the absorption of 5 mg. calcium. You can make up that calcium in one good swallow of milk.

I found contradictory reports of tannins in coffee. Some sources say there are no tannins in coffee.

I'm satisfied that coffee does not inhibit absorption of calcium or iron.
I raise my steaming cup of joe to you!
