Update on previous post and Paleo Diet (?)

Hey all. I posted a couple weeks ago about stomach problems I was having, not feeling full, always being hungry, etc etc. I saw my GI specialist and went through all the tests and I have celiac disease, which answers a lot of the symptoms I was having. So, I obviously need to go gluten-free. But I am considering trying the Paleo diet (lifestyle) since it is high protein, low carb, and naturally gluten-free. Just wondering if anyone else has tried out the Paleo diet (I hate calling it a diet, but for lack of better word...) and how it has worked out for you.

Thanks!

Amanda

I prefer the paleo lifestyle. I have never done it to lose weight, but it just makes my stomach feel more at ease. My body reacts to it better. I am not the model paleo girl by any means. But when I do follow it my body thanks me for it. :)

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

I pretty much eat a paleo diet.  I am reacting to gluten corn rice and dairy.  I do eat beans though which the paleo folks are opposed to.  But I love them!  and they don't upset my stomach.  I wil say that eating primarily non starchy veggies and meat/beans took some adjustment but I really like it now.  I had to figure out how to cook and have food on hand...  but I feel really good.  Did your GI doc think there was a connection between surgery and celiac?  I think I may have it as well but I can't test for it unless I go back on gluten for up to 3 months and I just don't think I can survive that.  I am desperate to understand better what is going on in my body.  i have an appt with an allergist in a few weeks.

I have had stomach issues since I was younger, with it worsening in my teen years. I have been treated for several different conditions, and nothing ever improved it. My symptoms definitely became almost unbearable after returning to a somewhat normal diet post RNY. You're right - you can't be tested unless you have been eating a regular diet for at least three months. My doctor wanted to do a hydrogen breath test on me as well to test for other allergies to glucose, lactose, and other stuff. But I just decided I would skip the additional tests and knock the stuff out of my diet as much as possible. All I know is my digestive system is always pissed off about something, and I am hoping the Paleo is my solution to it all.

Do you include potatoes in your diet? A book I purchased says no legumes or starchy vegetables. I thought potatoes fell into both those categories. But yet, there are several recipes that include potatoes. I don't know if it is because the book I bought is a book for beginners who are transitioning, so it is trying to make it a gradual change, but it confuses me. LOL

I am pretty much off potatoes, the best thing to do it a really strict elimination diet where you strip it down to nothing (meat only or broth only), wait till your tummy settles down, and then slowly oh so slowly add things back.  But we were not meant to conduct science experiments on ourselves and I find it almost impossible to stick with that so I just do the best I can.  It is hard work to figure all this out.

I am glad you got an answer, Amanda. I know zip diddly about Paleo, so I am no help there.

I have a friend that started last October and she's already lost 55 pounds she likes it and it works for her.  It started as a lifestyle change and also helped her lose weight.  Good luck to you.

I am gluten intolerant, have reactive hypoglycemia, daily nausea and constipation.  We all have to determine what foods work for us (and which ones give us issues).

REGARDLESS - remember we are always RNY gastric bypass patients for life and the bariatric diet must still be followed.  Most specialists and general practice MD's are not well educated on RNY patient needs and our digestive issues.  Often these specialists tell the RNY patient the same suggestions they give to non-gastric bypass patients.

I've had doctors and dieticians (not bariatric specialists) tell me crazy things like eating very large (like 4 cups salad or 6 ounces of meat - at one meal!) portions of food.  They just don't "get it" that my pouch won't let me do that.

You need to be an advocate for yourself.  Know your own diagnosis(s) and your lab values.  Read and do research.  You can often educate the specialist or general practitioner about gastric bypass and some of our special needs.

Best wishes.  Penny
