Liquid protein supplement

Hey all,

I'm post op day 2 after RNY and struggling to get my protein shakes down. I am currently using Bariatric Advantage protein powder to make my shakes but not only are they too thick for me, but they make my throat and ears super itchy and feel a tad swollen. Pretty sure I'm having some sort of allergic reaction.

i tend to be way too sensitive to the preservatives in protein shake powders. Does anyone have any suggestions for substitutes? I used to drink protein bulletsany years ago but can't find them at GNC anymore!

After surgery, I found the Synthrax Nectar were my favorite.  I used chocolate truffle, vanilla bean torte or Double Stuffed cookie mixed with unsweetened almond milk.  Even my little boy and husband like them (sadly for my wallet...) -- I also used the fruity ones mixed with water or crystal light.  I like Fuzzy Navel and Strawberry Kiwi.

For RTD, I used premier protein from Sam's Club.

They sell sample sized pouches of Nectar at Vitamin Shoppe.

Thank you for your reply! Is synthrax nectar a powder? I'm almost positive that I have an allergy to the powder mixes. My luck! Lol

I developed allergies to dairy - including whey, casein,- the proteins in dairy.

Maybe it would be good to get tested.  It took me 2 years before i saw allergist and i was suffering with allergies not knowing that whey or soy was main reason for them.

Good luck.

That's actually a great idea. Once a heal a little more, I'll make an appointment with the allergy specialist. It makes total sense that id be allergic to whey as this has happened in the past with protein powders. Hmm, I'll call my doctor and ask him for any other protein supplement substitutes. Thanks!!

I would try one of the Jay Robb egg white powders to see if it is a whey sensitivity issue...

Also, since it might be an issue with the sugar alcohols, I would see specifically WHICH sugar alcohol is in what you are drinking now, and try one that has a different one in it.

p.s. You do know that you can fix thie thickness problem just by adding more water or milk, right? I don't mean that to sound insulting, but you would be surprised how many people never think of that...

Yup! I tried adding more water and it decreased the thickness but then it still felt like it was getting stuck after just a little sip! I've gotten some great ideas here. Where can I get the Jay Robb egg white powders? GNC? I'm going to take a drive over there today and see what I can do. Thanks!

I got mine at Vitamin Shoppe (where they had individual sample packs of several flavors), but I am far enough out now that I only use one type of protein powder so I'm not really a good one to answer who carries what brands. ;)

GNC has lean protein shakes in different flavours, I love them all!

Hey!  I had my RNY 11/10, and I just starting on full liquids now. . . I HATE the overly fake sugar taste of most pot the mixes, just can't get them down. . I have Benn making the following:

8oz skim milk, 1 scoop injury unflavored protein powder, 1tbs king Arthur flour black cocoa, 2tbs PB2. . .

It is not sweet but super flavorful, 234 calories, 34g protein

Something along that line of a DIY may be better?

Good luck!
