After the first month...

I went in for my 1st month check up today and I have some unusual news. I, as of today, have lost 24 pounds. (I weighed with my home scale and found out it was off by 4 pounds  ) OK so I was disappointed, but tried to keep in mind, it was still 24 pounds gone. I expected more.

The second thing, with the VBG (which I had in 1991) losing weight the first month then less the second and slowing down to even more was my expectation. I shared this with both my husband and my NP. She set me straight. With the RNY, her expectation of me is 10% of my weight each of my first 3 months (I missed my first goal already now by 4 pounds - if this were the case I should have lost 28 pounds this month  ) I was trying to be happy with the 24 pounds, I mean think about it: without this surgery, I don't think there is anyway I could have lost 24 pounds in one month! 

Can it really be done? I walk everyday, I have only been eating about 60 grams of protein a day (learned I need to step that up to 70 - 80 due to my height) I feel like I think about eating ALL THE TIME.

Love to hear from everyone how your first months have been, did you really continue to lose as much as you did that first month??

I think your NP is setting you up for unrealistic expectations.  I would suggest that you put your height and weight into the Post Op Planner (under Resources at the top of the page).

That gives a very accurate prediction for most people.

Water weight comes into play...Also your cycle.  You could be in a stall.  I will just share one thing I would use to break a stall...Hard physical work.  As I was losing I would hit stalls...Weighed 3-6 times a day.  We use to call those scale whoores.  When I would walk I wouldn't lose...My body had adjusted.  But doing hard physical work (using muscles I didn't normally use) my weight would drop daily.  Things like gardening, windows, cleaning, washing the car would break it for me.  But walking...My body would hold on tight to the weight...Go figure...Brian

I agree your NP should not put such pressure on you. Not everyone loses in the same pattern... and 24 is great for the first month. I lost 11 the first month. I had a 3 1/2 week stall starting after one week. I always set mini goals for myself, I usually missed them by a pound or two...but it still helped to have them. Does it matter what I lost the first month now that I am 22 months out? No. The point is keep moving forward.

I agree with white dove- 24 pounds in a month is a %$%$ load of weight. See my stats below- and I didn't have a revision, but I lost 53 before surgery so my loss has been slower.

Thank you all for your answers!! I can't tell you how much they have helped. My surgeon, was top notch! But his PA's..... well have been OK, one I didn't like at all (her personality was awful) and the other her personality is nice but when it comes to me, she says things like. "people who have revisions don't do as well as regular people who have RNY answer because the revision people already know how to cheat she thinks, or this is my last chance I will not be able to have more surgeries I only have a small window of opportunity to lose weight then keep it off - which lead to me not really wanting to eat at all and begin a whole new issue of a relationship with food, and the last thing was how I should be losing 10% of my weight each month for the first 3 months - which seemed a bit intimidating, not that we all don't want to lose 25 to 30 pounds a month for 3 months but doesn't seem encouraging to set that high of a goal"

I'm really glad for this site, the first time I had weight loss surgery I went through it alone I couldn't find a local doctor to help me with answers. Now there are lot more people who have done weight loss surgery, so I am not alone out there trying to figure out what is right for me

I'm three weeks out today and down 12 lbs so , everyone's different . Just hang in there . I know it's frustrating but we are at least moving the right direction

there are people who lose 24 lbs the first month, but I would say after being on this board for a couple of years that that's not the norm.  It's definitely on the higher end.  You'll find plenty of folks who lose 15 or 16 or 18 lbs, and there's nothing wrong with that.  I was one of those "slow losers", and I've lost over 180 lbs.  

It varies so much from person to person - your starting weight, your gender, whether or not you lost a lot of weight before your surgery, etc.  Your NP should know that!!!
