Dreaded pre-op diet headache

Well I kind of expected it to happen because I'm prone to headaches anyhow.  Yesterday was day 1 of my 10 day pre-op diet (4 protein shakes a day, clear liquids & 2 cups of veggies a day).  I felt it coming on throughout the morning and about 1 p.m. the headache hit full force.  Had to go home from work early and lie down with an ice pack.  It's not quite as bad this morning, but we'll see how the day goes.  I'm not too hungry, actually the smell of the shakes makes me a bit nauseated.  I added some crystal lite to the one this morning and it went down a bit better.  I know this will soon be ancient history, but it's kinda tough going through it.  I know most of you have "been there, done that" so I guess I'm just hoping for some encouragement.

It could be withdrawl symptoms from carbs, sugar, caffiene, a number of things. I don't remember feeling bad for long. Maybe mix it up and try different shakes, isopure, adkins lift drinks, etc

also- there was a sugar free apple cider drink I liked at walmart, only 15 calories that I drank to replace the 'hot ' coffee drink I missed.

It will fly by, try to get your mind off it.

Thanks.  I have a protein drink (bariatric advantage) that I have to use from my bariatric center so not much option there.  I can add no-sugar flavorings which I'm working with.  I kicked the caffeine habit several months ago, but it is almost definitely carb/sugar withdrawl.  I've also had to give up my beloved ibuprofen.  I have some ginger tea that I'm going to try - hoping that will help with the nausea.

wow- ours didn't force any product on us - they feel it would be a conflict.

Hot teas should help.

Hi there, I know how you feel. I too started yesterday. I have to drink optifast 4times a day. I have to drink it for 14 days. My surgery is on June 6th. I started to get a headache yesterday so I drank a extra 500 ml bottle of water and the headache went away. Good luck were almost there.

I had the bariatric advantage too. I mixed the chocolate with milk and ice, then 2T of PB2. It made a pretty good shake.

The first three days for me were horrible.  I worked through it, but it was a constant headache that I couldn't get relief from.  I've never had a headache that hurt in that particular way, either, since I'm not really prone to them.  But, on the 4th day of the diet I feel like I had finished the carb detox and felt so much better!

Hang in there, it will pass!

just empathy....I had my preop testing on the16th and had to fast for that...I wasn't done until 2pm. I was puking sick from a migraine by the time I finished...caffeine withdrawal. But I am prone to migraines in general. I am weaning down the coffee before surgery but wonder what I will do for migraines myself. I usually take motrin, so...
