TMI question after RNY...

I had my RNY Tuesday morning the 18th. Is it normal that I still have not had a bowel movement? I feel like I need to go but nothing comes, and no gas release to speak of either. Just a couple very small releases.

Thanks in advance,

Suzy

I know, TMI ;)  I did not have an actual bowel movement for quite a few days, I think almost a week.  My surgeon's office called for a check on me at about 5 days post-op and when the nurse heard I had not had one she had me up the senna I was taking to two or three times a day until I had one.  I would call your doctor if you have any questions, but I do not think it is unreasonable to skip for several days.  You are not taking in much, anyway...  And make sure your liquids are high and you are walking.

FYI I just had my first normal one two days ago, and I am six weeks post-op today.

Hi

No it is not unusual, but an effect from the anistesia, and the RNY.  If they gave you a prescription  when you left the hospital for colace or something else, start taking it.  If not call your doctors office and ask for something.  This could be an ongoing problem so you might want to take something to keep you regular.  I take a capful of Miralax every morning in a glass of crystal light.  It disolved easy and has no taste.

Good luck

It took me about 4-5 days to start. Don't be freaked out if it looks like wet cement when it happens either. That goes away after a couple of weeks.

You will probably not have a BM until completely off opioid pain medicines.  I was sent home with Colace and it took about a week to get to normal again.

Thanks everyone! I thought it was just normal, but wanted to make sure.

My digestive system was anything but normal during the first post-op year adjusting to the new re-route.  It is surprising to read some WLSers go on trips soon after surgery.  I stayed close to home--very close to home.

My 1st one was 5 days later and they told me that was average.  It was after that first one that the real problems began with several bouts of crazy constipation.  Everyone is different but be sure to  keep a close eye on the situation.

My RNY was Wed the 19th of Oct. Went home Fri 10/21.....could have used one more day in the hospital.

You are not alone, haven't had a BM yet. Having a very difficult time getting fluids & protein in......I'm bummed. I thought I could hit this head on & string AND be a star patient.

Lucky to get 300 calories in

Tomorrow . ....I'm tracking everything in a notebook.old school style
