A friend invited me to an intro yoga class. I had all of the usual thoughts like not being flexible enough, making a fool out of myself, getting weird looks, etc.. I honestly wanted to cancel, but I showed up and participated.

It was the best experience I've had in a long time. I found I'm more flexible than I thought. It was an 1 hr 15 minutes of focused time on myself. My normal gym has TVs going and I have music playing to make it through the workout. Yoga was just focused attention on myself and doing what I can and being ok with that.

Truly awesome experience that I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for RNY. And I'll be a regular at the classes from now on.

I love yoga... but.. be careful... don't push yourself farther than your body would take you... I got hurt a few times doing yoga.. when I try to prove to myself that "I CAN DO IT"  ... just because I can - it does not mean I should...- ios my new motto...

Sometimes I go now to a class run by a young or inexperienced instructor... as they show turns and twists and I watch... and I know that I probably should not do that... I had some of them ask me "can't you do that? just try..." my answer - with a smile.."I know I probably can... but I JUST chose not to do that.."

Thank you. I agree. I'm keeping it within my limits. It was an awesome experience.

I love yoga. I'm doing Yoga with Adriene on youtube right now, I don't have classes near me that work with my schedule. You're right about the distractions needed with other workouts. Yoga provides a centering experience and a wellness that I don't get from anything else.

So glad you had a good experience.  I love resorative yoga.  I agree with you on trying new things you would not have tried before RNY.  So many things.

That is AWESOME!  I want to do yoga, but like you have all those same fears.   I am going to try doing some at home the progress to classes, I think.    You've inspired me, THANK YOU!

Trying new things is what it's all about because we are to find something we love so we keep moving forward toward success.  I tried a yoga class once and didn't love it because the stress of embarrassing myself was too much.  I am not talking just lack of ability to do all the moves, either..toot toot.  Yet I can dance in front of people without a single worry how foolish I must look. I think there's a saying that goes "different strokes for different folks"....good job finding yours.

I keep thinking about doing yoga. I'd like to work on my flexibility. I just never get around to it.

That's awesome! I love yoga, and have tried a lot of styles, keep it up! As hala said, be aware of what your body is telling you. Good instructors will always include modifications or alternatives too.

As a note to others reading this and who are intimidated by going to a yoga class, I've been to many, even at my highest weight. It's always been a welcoming environment. As a first timer, I'd suggest classes with either : intro, hatha or gentle in the title. They are usually a bit slower paced, and give you a chance to learn the poses and lingo!

if you aren't ready for a class, check out some plus size yoga videos on YouTube. There's also chair yoga for people who can't get to the mat.

Give it shot!
