What is this Losing Phase I keep reading?

My bypass was 1/31/17 with complications. The pre-surgery time I had a lot of support. After surgery, I've been on my own. I used this site to help me prepare and thought you could help me now? I see references to taking advantage of the losing phase. I want to take advantage but I'm not sure I understand what is meant by the advice. Mentally, I'm having a hard time. I'm used to eating when I'm having a feeling. The first month or so I couldn't but now I can. I can feel the control the surgery provided leaving me and I'm scared. I can eat sugar at will, sour patch is empty!

Thanks for any advice!

The "losing phase" is the time immediately after surgery when you're actively working to lose weight, as opposed to "maintenance" when you want to stay at your current/goal weight.

For RNY'ers, this is also the phase when malabsorption is happening. It's considered something of a honeymoon phase, as malabsorption is not permanent.

You need to get some good old fashioned meat in you. That'll make you remember you had gastric bypass a few months ago!

seriously you did so much to get where you are right now. Sour patch kids are definitely not worth what you went through.

Welcome to the boards!

I'm sorry to hear you have so little support post op. I suggest spending a lot of time on this forum. Search everything you are curious about, in the upper right corner. Ask questions, join a daily menu thread. There is so much you can learn and so many to draw support from on here.

And get the sugar out of your house.

I can eat junk food all day long, grazing and not feel any restriction. But if I eat protein, I am full. This morning I cooked 1/2 red pepper and 1/4 onion and then added 2 eggs and a about an ounce of shredded cheese. I could only eat 1/3. But last night I ate about 4 oz of pretzels after a salad and continued with strawberries. Carbs are digested with saliva and by the time they hit your stomach they pass on thru. Protein, especially dense protein like beef and chicken are hard to eat more than 2-3 ozs. Yogurt doesn't make me full. Take the weekend and grill some meat. Eat only meat for 2 or 3 days and you will see that you have restriction. The rest is something you have to control the rest of your life. Some days the cravings are horrible, other days I don't want to be bothered to eat. You need to use the first 6-12 months to develop habits that you NEED for the rest of your life. Hunger will come back, stress will come back, old habits are easy to pick up. CHOOSE to lose weight. It is not magic, surgery is only a tool that will help you lose weight. The pre-diet and liquid diet were steps to wean you off junk food. You can do it!

The losing phase, also known as The Honeymoon Phase, is 99.9 percent mental. It is the time when we are recovering from surgery and it is physically difficult to eat much volume, physical hunger is at the lowest it will ever be, AND coincides with the time when we are laser focused on paying attention to what, and how much, we put in our mouths. It's that time when our resolve and ability to eat less makes it easiest to lose weight.

It's over for most people by 12 to 18 months post op. There is no reason it has to be. But that's when diet fatigue sets in, and we wander back to old habits.

It is very concerning that you are wandering back to old habits so soon. It will never again be easier for you to lose weight than it is right now.

Ditch the sugar. Ditch every carb. Dense protein every time you eat something. Weigh and track every morsel. You can do this, but if you don't reign it in now, you will regret it forever.

I wish Grim's reply could be pinned to the top of this board. It answers so many questions for new people, and gives great reminders to the rest of us.
