How much did you walk?

Since surgery Wednesday I've stayed on top of taking my medicines, drinking my water, drinking my protein, getting my breathing done with the incentive spirometer, and walking whenever I get up to go to the bathroom...but I'm wondering how much I should be walking. Can I walk more? Should I walk more? I'm not keeping track of any sort of step goal (especially since I took my watch off because my wrist is so puffy from an IV stick).

I feel like I could probably go for a longer walk, but at the same time I worry that I'm putting my cart before the horse and trying to push too much too soon. I recognize that's an issue I have...."balls to the wall" whether or not I'm ready for it!

Did you guys have a specific amount/time you tried to get in each day?

I was terrified of a blood clot so I walked and walked. I seriously don't remember this but my son said I insisted on walking after being back in my room an hour. I don't walk much now but try ride my bike 5 miles a day

I walked and walked in the hall and around the nurses station. The more you walk the quicker you will feel more like yourself again. My nurses offered to put me to work as I was walking so much.

I did a lot of tv watching and I would walk during all the commercials unless I was sleeping. It ended up being about 6000-7000 a day if I'm remembering right. I wanted the gas out of me and no clots. That was my motivation

I really like this suggestion so I'm using it! Definitely no issues getting rid of the gas, everything is moving as it should be

I walked up and down the hall in the hospital, each time able to make it a little farther. Walking is good, and I was advised to walk a bit every hour. I didn't walk that frequently, but I did a few times a day. Still on that schedule. I too was concerned about blood clots, plus it made me feel good to walk, and after I walked as well. I was, weirdly, experiencing my knees buckling for a few days when I came home, which made me a little worried to walk outside in case I fell. So I walk more in the house where I can grab a wall for support if need be, though I drove for the first time yesterday, went to the market, and ran another errand. I was kinda pooped afterwards, but then again it was unholy hot! The knee buckling is apparently not that uncommon after surgery in general, and it is already getting better, thank goodness!

I did a bunch of laps while in the hospital, anytime I had to pee I'd have them unhook me from the monitors and off I'd go. Here it feels like less walking but I think I'm actually up more....and the lap around the kitchen or game room is shorter than the hospital floor!

I encourage you to walk as much as you can and keep it up. As others have said, the more you walk the better you will feel. It will help to pass the gas and keep things moving which is really important.

I took a page out of conazza's post and I'm walking while commercials are running, round and round the table I go!

I didn't track my steps, but I like conazza, I walked during tv breaks. I also had two out side walks a day, at least 15 minutes each. The very early days, I just shuffled up and down my sidewalk, so if I got tired, I was close to the house.
