Help me decide!

Hello. I just had my first consult today and learned my surgeon will either do the sleeve or an RNY. Please help me decide which one I should do. Why did you choose the rny over the sleeve? Thanks in advance for any help.

I wanted the sleeve at first but due to my history of severe stomach acid my surgeon strongly encourgaged me to go with the bypass instead. The pre op post op diets are pretty much the same for both. You lose weight faster with the bypass because of the initial malabsorption. I am happy to report that I had bypass surgery on May 2nd and wonder why I did not do it sooner! I have already been taken off the acid meds (no sign of that anymore!) and my blood pressure meds! Getting healthier every day. I wish you the best of luck with whichever you choose.

Congratulations! Thank you for your information. I do suffer from acid reflux and frequent heartburn so that is one of the main reasons why I am leaning towards the rny procedure.

I didn't actually have a choice, but I did originally want a sleeve. Once I learned more, I realized RNY was the better option for me because 1) I had really bad heartburn and 2) I liked the outcomes of RNY better.

I'm also an "original VSGer" that went RNY because of reflux.

One thing that helped guide me was the endoscopy. If it showed a considerable hiatal hernia I may have stuck with VSG as fixing the hernia can fix your reflux. But there was no hernia so it was RNY all the way

Even if the hernia it would have been a tough call.

With your history of reflux, I wouldn't even think about a sleeve. There are too many on here who ended up needing to revise to RNY after VSG because the gerd was making them miserable.

Amen. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times. I think recommending VSG to a person with diagnosed reflux/Gerd is borderline malpractice. I didn't have ANY reflux or heartburn prior to surgery and developed a raging case. I can only imagine how awful it would be if you have GERD pre-op
