Drinking water during exercise...

I'm getting super frustrated with my inability to drink while exercising. Is there a trick I don't know? I feel like I'm taking two or three sips and my body acts like I just beer bonged a gallon! I'm getting the nausea where the saliva flows into your mouth - super bad after just a sip or two.

This seems to be the worst when I'm in my cardio range (at my old age that's around 150bpm) and/or exertion, and it stays a problem for 20 or 30 minutes after my workout.

HI

First in the beginning drinking water was hard for me too.

I think it might be your relative new-ness after surgery.

In the beginning, I would swallow water and if I got down to do a push up right after, I felt it was going to run right up and out (like with no heaving on my part).

You are not going to like this suggestion but this is what I do.

1) Super duper small sips.

2) I also totally stop when I have a sip. I literally leave the front of the class, walk to the back of the room. Have that small sip..walk back to my spot

3) I dont do a push up right after the sip either.

4) when I have the small sip, I kind of swish and swirl it around in my mouth to totally hydrate my mouth so I wont get the urge to take a lot more sips or a big gulp.

5) I totally drink water/sips about 8 times in a 45 minute class. Always hydrating before, during and after.

6) it will pass.

do you think you are sucking excess air when drinking cuz you are breathing hard?

I don't think so, I am generally careful about that. I love the swishing idea and plan to try it out!

Can't say I've had this problem. But outside of spinning, I do not hydrate during my cardio work. I will after, or while doing weights. Not sure if that's good or bad-- but not drinking during may he your answer.

I don't drink while running but do while using the elliptical.

I likely would during the elliptical- but by bottle won't fit in the cup holder- and I won't stop to pick it up and take a sip.

First world problems.

I second SkinnyScientist's suggestion to swish. During my first year post-op, I couldn't drink more than a sip at a time, which just doesn't fly when biking during the desert summer. Take one good sip and hold it in there for a bit; your mouth tissues can absorb quite a bit.

Have you tried different temperatures for your water? Cold water while exercising does a number on my stomach, but I have much better luck with room-temperature.

The last time I tried drinking, it was from a drinking fountain which is chilled, I'll carry a room temp bottle with me the next time and see if that helps.
