6 Month Dr. visit today

I had my 6 month Dr. visit today. She was really pleased with my progress. I have at this point according to her lost about 75 percent of my weight. They are looking for their patients to lose 50 to 70 percent, they feel that this is a success. She asked me what my goal was and when I told her it was 145, she said that was really low. That an 80 percent loss would put me at 180, and she feels that this is a realistic goal. She said that 90 percent would put me at 157 and that was definitely low enough, if I could even get down that far.

It kind of ticked me off. I was completely determined to meet and possibly surpass my goal, now I am even more determined. I don't like it when someone tells me I can't do something. I don't go back to see her for 6 months....I would really love to be at my goal weight when I go back to see her. That would mean I need to lose 47 pounds in the next 6 months. I really hope I can make it by then.

For all their smarts sometimes Doctors are stupid. The statistics on 50% are from looking at patients 5 years out. If you only lose 50% to start who knows where you will be in 5 years.

Great job... and get to your goal.

My nut asked me what my goal weight was and I told her 170 and she told me that it was to high. She said 160 would put me at a bmi of 25 and suggested I should change my goal weight to be lower. Im 5'8" I don't want to be skin and bones, let me be happy when I meet my goal and if I want to lose more or change my goal after I met my first one I will.....

I was told the same thing - that a normal BMI goal was unrealistic for someone who starts out SMO. But I did it - and so have a lot of other people on here. If that's what you want, then go for it!!

Hi,

Your mentality is my mentality. When someone tells me I can't do something, it makes me more determined and pissed off. That being said, I am a very high BMI like you were. Mine was 55.0 and I honestly cannot see getting down to 145. Not because I can't from a weight loss perspective but mostly because I do not think I would look good at that weight without tons of plastics. I had set a goal of 145 and upped that to 165 which is my lowest sleeve weight from 9 years ago.

That's awesome. OH is full of people that have lived this - and many say the same thing, that these conversations really motivate them to achieve their goals. My surgeon doesn't set goal weights, but he told me early on that I could expect to be down in the low 200s based on my starting weight. I was down to 150 by 9 months post-op and have been maintaining at that weight for the last 9 months.

Awesome!!! Thanks for the added motivation. I would really love to to be at 145 for my 12 month check up...just to show her I can do it and even more than that I want to still be at that weight when I see her for my next appointment at 18 / 24 month checkup.

I need to lose 46.4 pounds in 6 months - I think if I start exercising more than just at work that I should be able to make it. I lost 60 pounds in the last 4 months, so it should be very doable.
