My PCP Dr. prescribed Diclofenac topical 1% Gel for knee arthritis. Is it OK for me ? I am four years out RNY surgery.

it is an NSAID. They are not recommended for ppl who have had WLS, in any form, because they thin the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers.

even topically, the medication crosses from the blood stream to the stomach lining.

I would not use it. I was prescribed the gel when I tore my rotator cuff along with a muscle relaxant. My doctor knew I had WLS, but thought it was not as bad as taking an NSAID. When I was scheduled for surgery, I was told to stop taking the gel from the anesthesia because it would be in my blood at the time of surgery. That really woke me up. If I can't have it in my body for surgery, I don't need it ever.

My husband had a shoulder replacement in June 2017. He was prescribed baby asprin to thin his blood and prevent blood clots after surgery. Shoulder surgery was a 2 night hospital stay. Three days later, he acquired an internal bleed from the intenstines from the baby asprin. He required 6 bags of blood, 2 bags of plasma and 2 bags of platelets along with a 5 day hospital stay and 2 surguries to repair a leak in his intenstines.

My husband has osteoarthritis. He has had surgery on both feet, both kneecaps, one total knee replacement and both shoulders repaired and one total shoulder replacement. He swears by tart cherry juice. He has to stop taking the pills before each surgery, so he can feel the difference when the tablets are out of his system. I don't know if it would work for you, but I would try it before an NSAID.

Call your wls surgeons office and ask. I have heard people at my yearly appointments talking about taking it

I have had 2 heart attacks, 4 stents and A-fib. I take Xarelto and 81mg aspirin. Thus my bariatric doctor has me on Carafate and Protonix for life. Here's the question and answer to my bariatric doctor.

My Question to Dr Kim - My VA doctor has prescribed diclofenac topical Gel 1% for my left knee arthritis pain. Tylenol does not help the pain. Question: I am 4 years out RNY bypass. Is diclofenac gel 1% ok for me?

The Answer I rec'd - Yes it is but used very sparingly. If you slather it on, you can absorb too much & it is an NSAID. I would love it if you used it 2 x a day instead of 4 x a day which is how it is usually ordered.

The doctors tell me there is no antidote for Xarelto. If I get a bleeding ulcer they can not stop the bleeding.

Knee hurts bad. I hope to get it fixed sooner rather than later.

Wish me luck.

I have bad arthritis in both knees, and need replacements, so I know how bad knee pain can be. I also had a bleeding ulcer 2 years ago, and am lucky to have survived.

I would not touch an NSAID for anything in the world. And taking an NSAID while on Xarelto just seems insane to me. There is no pain in the world that would get me to use an NSAID every day, day in and day out.
