Searching for non-deficient RNY'ers

Hi there. This is my first post. I've lurked for a while. I'm a couple weeks before RNY. Can I hear from those who've had RNY and are NOT deficient in vitamins, minerals, etc.? And how you accomplish that? This is my biggest concern. Thanks in advance!

Hello! I'm only 2 months post op, so certainly not a vet, but from what I see, as long as you stay diligent about getting labs drawn, compare them to previous labs and try to identify patterns (if anything is dropping), and most importantly, take your recommended vitamins every day, you shouldn't run into too much trouble.

Thanks for the response! I just want to be certain that diligence and following doc's orders will actually prevent the deficiencies. I fully intend to follow the rules, but still....may be just nerves on my part. :)

I think that what happens is a few years out people stop being diligent about taking vitamins and stop taking cause they're labs have been fine, or switch to a new "easier" vitamin, i.e. the patch I keep hearing about that doesn't absorb on everyone. I've always taken supplements so not really a change for me other than the Calcium, but with a family history of osteoporosis was probably heading there anyways.

I'm with you in that I'm already taking supplements - a multi, fish oil, biotin, etc., and have for years, so that won't be new to me, either. What supplements do you take?

Currently post surgery I take 2 prenatal vitamins, 5x300 mg Calcium Citrate, Omega 3, and getting a monthly B12 injection. My program recommends prenatal vitamins as they have the iron too. I've had both iron and potassium deficiencies previously so these get extra monitoring in my case although I wonder where the irons going as I'm post menopausal.

Start off with the ASMBS recommended supplements, get regular labs drawn, and adjust dosages as needed.

The folks that think they are doing fine stop taking supplements, and stop getting regular and complete lab work. Then they start having problems.

It's not hard. Taking supplements is just one of many new healthy habits we should all be working on. Sadly, many don't bother.

Hi - I am 5 years out from my gastric bypass surgery and my blood work always comes back perfect. I am religious about taking all of my vitamins, I never miss a day. I also schedule my labs annually as well. I am just recently experiencing some nausea when I eat foods that have never bothered me before, so I am starting to write down what I eat, when and how I feel. I have strayed a little from the protein first then veggies - it's usually the carbs and fat that get me. I have never been able to eat sugar - even a little will make me sick - and I don't drink alcohol (sugars) or drink carbonated drinks. Pretty much water for me. I has a lapband before this, which about killed me (choked me constantly). I am so extremely happy with my bypass outcome. I wish you all the best.
