Hello all!

I have a history of setting unrealistic goals for myself, so I wanted to get some outside perspective on my first big post op goal. I would like to get to Onederland by my birthday of Sept. 7th. I'll list my stats below, but please let me know if you think this is a reasonable goal, under shooting, or over shooting.

Me: 24 y/o - 5'5" - HW: 260lb SW: 255lb CW: 220lb - 6 weeks post op

Also, as a side note, does anyone know how I can put this info by my ticker?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi there.

Everything is possible but my advice is not to set goals by a certain date. We get discouraged and then we give up - at leats that was my case before WLS.

Having said that, we have almost the same stats, except you are much younger, which is a good advantage point for you. I had my surgery on June 26 2017, at 261. I went back and looked at my data, I was in onederland on Nov 8th. So almost 4.5 months.

For your ticker, go to settings, click on top on board and then add your signature with your stats.

Good luck and congrats on starting a healthy life style.

I would agree with Sheila on not setting time goals. As long as you stick to the program, the weight will come off. Numerous factors influence how fast or slow that happens. So yes, it's possible - but then, it might not happen, either. I was a really slow loser, but I ended up losing all of my excess weight. I was a very compliant patient...

I know it's hard not to anticipate where we will be at by a certain point. I had my surgery 3 months ago and booked a trip to Vegas in October hoping to be close to goal weight:) I started at the same weight as you, 255, and am currently at 182 so it's definitely possible. Best of luck!

At 6 weeks post op, I'd have to guess (very cautiously) that you would lose 1 to 1.5lb per week; that seems to be the common rate after the first month post-op.

With 11 weeks until your birthday, I think I wouldn't plan on losing 20lb by September.

I know that setting "time goals" is probably not the most productive thing after WLS but I've done it too. I don't necessarily think its a terrible thing as long as you are realistic and also prepared to fall short...but I am only 4 mo's PO so I do not know it all.

Personally, I am trying to only set short term goals and keeping them on the conservative side because I don't want to feel like I am setting myself up for failure, but I like to have these goals to give myself something to work toward and prevent me from slacking off.
I don't think that losing 20lbs in 2 and a half months is an unreasonable goal but I also know that you may end up hitting a stall or 2 in there somewhere which might cause you to start feeling defeated (I hit a big one that lasted over 3 weeks right around my 3 month mark). As long as you're following the plan, eating low carb, high protein and getting plenty of water, as well as trying to stay active, I don't see why it would be unrealistic for you to meet that goal or at least come close...just keep in mind that if it doesn't happen by that date, it WILL happen, it just may take a little bit longer :) you're so close.

My surgeons office places goals for their patients to meet by their follow up appointments too...I think it helps keep people accountable for sticking to their meal plans and exercise regimens. They usually tell me "by your next visit you should probably have lost between X and Y pounds." I asked what happens if I don't? basically the answer I was given is that they will want to spend some time going over my daily routine and what it is I'm doing/eating so they can help me tweak things. seems reasonable to me.

I have heard somewhere that a reasonable expectation is to average around 8lbs per month but since you're so early out, it may go faster for you in the first 3-6 months then slow down quite a bit as you get closer to your goal.

I don't understand why you would even do this to yourself, given your admitted problem with the reality of weight loss.

Why would you set yourself up for this kind of stress. Jus5 don't set any weight loss goals and get on with losing. Stop focusing on when and just get it done.

I always set time goals. Almost never met them exactly but for me it was motivating. I never set one for an event though.

You are early out and have about 2 ½ months so could it happen? Yes. But you never know when a plateau will hit. The scale tend to want to hang just above 200 for awhile when you are almost there.

I made weight loss goals by pound amounts like my first goal was under 225, then under 200 and 175 etc but I didn't impose a time on it. I ended losing faster than I would have set dates for so I think it might be better to follow the rules like a goddess and let it unfold how your body wants and enjoy the ride while it happens. Hopefully it'll be the last time we have to lose massive amounts of weight. I loved that excitement and all the complements as I got more and more pounds off. Now it's no longer the same excitement and the compliments have dried up cause everyone is used to the thin me. So I'd just in enjoy the time as it comes. Best of luck to you.
