Migraine

I had RNY on June 7th. I have had a really rough few weeks due to what I believe is severe ketosis symptoms. But I did feel I was getting better...until yesterday.

Yesterday I woke up with a migraine. I typically take Amerge, but due to potential overuse migraine I am only allotted 9 per month, and they were all gone before I even had surgery. It became a huge ordeal yesterday. I called the surgeons office to see about the possibility of taking naproxen. They said no due to my liver enzymes still being through the roof, and told me to call my PCP about potential meds besides Amerge.

I called and was dismissed, being told to take Tylenol. I sobbed for an hour, which didn't help, took a klonapin and hoped to pass out.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? And did anyone go back to old meds they used previously? I used to take Maxalt and Imitrex, and Maxalt probably was helpful, but in true migraineur fashion, I'd wait too long to take it and it would feel effective. Is it weird to ask for meds that I previously didn't find effective??

I also suffer from migraines. You mentioned talking to your primary care provider, do you also see a neurologist? I found that my primary (although fantastic) just does not understand and have the knowledge required to fully deal with chronic migraine. The fact that your primary dismissed you tells me they don't really understand migraine and you should consider specialist treatment.

I have tried a few different things but post surgery I have found a maxalt (rizatriptan) with an extra strength Tylenol to be the best. I am not always good at taking them early but I am getting better and as long as I don't wait until it is blindingly bad it works within 1/2 hour to 45 minutes.

I have been to a neurologist. But that neurologist is 2 hours away. He sent instructions back for my primary. That was 2 years ago. And I have been fine since with what I was taking.

my PCP knows better-and he's being lazy. I plan to talk to the surgeon on Friday about it because he is more helpful.

My question is if it is weird to ask for a med I used to take?

No! I don't think so at all. It may not have been the most effective for you at the time because of your cir****tances and ability to recognise those early symptoms, but post surgery you need something effective -and- pouch safe.

I always put my medication on automatic refills at the pharmacy and pick them up even when I don't need them. A little stockpile for those months where the migraine just doesn't stay away.

I would maybe contact the neurologist office as well. You may be able to get a few solutions over the phone without a crazy drive.

There are other drugs that are effective for migranes, some of which are used for blood pressure.. topramax? One of my neighbors was placed on it daily, and it has been effective for her.

The surgery changes the way everything is processed in your body, a medicine you used with limited effectiveness may become efective again.

I would try to see that neurologist again for a current evaluation..as soon as you are able to schedule the trip.

If your surgery was much further out, NSAIDS could be an option with PPI for stomach protection. The other lady who said it can cause ulcers is correct, it can also cause gastritis, IBS,and other complications caused by these conditions. It was a direct cause of one of my intestinal twists. I had to quit my job to be able to stop the meds, My twist came within 10 days, of heavy use of NSAIDs for 1 week. I have indocin suppositories for arthritic pain and use infrequently. it can have similar actions, because it goes systemic even from suppository.

I have Lyme arthritis, which manifests as rheumatoid... I have an approval to use a pain protocol with Prevacid 30 mg, Ibuprophen 400 ...Thru the winter i use about 1-2x a week... often go a month without using anything.

Migraines -- I feel your pain!!

1st, PLEASE do not take Naproxen or any other NSAID ever again!! It will cause ulcers in the new pouch!! Much more of an issue than elevated liver enzymes, and those enzymes may stay elevated during the weight loss phase.

2nd, you may be somewhat dehydrated being a new post op. Dehydration can be a trigger.

Do you have post op pain meds? Maybe a dose would help.

I take Imitrex since Rny, didn't work 6 years ago but works like a charm now. Go for it and feel better soon!

I get migraines occasionally and take Maxalt for them. For me, dehydration and caffeine are triggers so I work to keep up on my fluids and drink de-caffeinated beverages. YMMV

Definitely call your neurologist for guidance. Perhaps Maxalt or Imitrex can be prescribed and you will get some relief. But until that happens, drink, drink, drink. Good luck!
