Taking NSAIDS?

Morning RNYers. As some of you know, I injured my right big toe 2 1/2 weeks ago. I went to Urgent Care last night because I'm still in pain even though I've been taking care of it. The doctor there really wanted me to take an anti-inflammatory but I explained that I'm post-op WLS and that I couldn't take NSAIDS. I just got off the phone with my bariatric surgeon and he said that I could take a coated Advil with food. I was really surprised that he suggested it because I thought Advil was off limits.

Just wanted to check in with other folks and see what your instructions and experience is before I cause myself injury from taking something I shouldn't.

What do you think? Have you ever taken coated Advil and had problems?

I was informed no NSAIDs after gastric bypass as taking them will greatly increase your risk for ulcers. I wouldn't take the chance.

It's a risk vs reward decision only you can make. I have personally taken an NSAID in the past, with no ill effect, but know I could take one tomorrow and have problems. Some people get ulcers with no history of NSAIDs.

I think the blanket "no NSAIDs" is an abundance of caution, but we're not all the same person, so it will always be a roll of the dice whether you'll be ok, or not!

As I said, risk vs reward.

This is exactly correct because my first few years my WLS center did not tell me this and I ignorantly took Advil and Excredrin just as I did prior to WLS. No problems but now that I know I never take them. I did this my first 8 years! Not good but luckily nothing happened.

now when I have a headache I take Midol complete in daytime (contains caffeine) and pamprin at night (no caffeine). They work better then Tylenol for me.

After reading daisydoos post I might add maybe my saving grace was that I take a PPI daily for acid reflux I developed years before I had WLS and never went away after my surgery. Maybe the PPI protected me.

Sorry to hear your toe is still so painful, that's the problem with foot/toe injuries, without staying totally off your foot its hard to heal properly.

Like MarinaGirl my Centre told us not to take NSAIDs ever again.

My Family Doctor, who is not well versed in Bariatric Surgery feels that I can take NSAIDS once in a while IF I take a PPI with it, that's her version. I personally don't take NSAIDS because I worry I will be that one person that takes one and will get an uncler/s.

There are certainly lots of other pain meds out there that are not NSAID based that you could take. I know most docs will automatically suggest an NSAID, Advil seems to cure all for everything LOL

As Citizen Kim said only you can make the decision if the risk vs the reward is worth it for you. Whether you take coated Advil or non coated NSAID is an NSAID it will be in your system. Good luck and hope you can get some relief soon.

Daisy, thanks for weighing in. If it was just the pain, I'd deal with it, but the doctor from Urgent Care thinks that the anti-inflammatory in Advil would help it heal faster...reduce the pain, etc. Not sure what else I can take.

Geez sorry your toe is still so sore. The fact that your surgeon suggested it makes it seem ok but.... it's been driven into us to never take them. I believe it comes down to a personal choice. Personally I would look at other options first. Good luck, the journey is real.
