Here recently I have noticed several of my friends (both WLS patients and civilians), are suffering from mild to severe depression.  During the night, I know I should be sleeping, my mind was racing.  It seems we could go on forever about the things that are wrong with our life.  You know what I'm talking about; 1. The price of gas 2. The price of food. 3. The price of anything!!!!! I believe you get the message.  Well I know depression is a serious thing!  I have suffered from it for years, and come from a family that knows the side effects all too well!  This is where the midnight thought process kicked in.  Why don't we spend a few minutes a day being thankful for the good things and report them here once a week! When Tom Hanks was in college (I think I remember the story being about Tom Hanks), his humanities professor posed the age old question..."Is the glass half full or half empty?"  tom went home and pondered the thought for a weekend.  He was hoping to come up with a really philosophical answer that would blow the socks off his professor.  After contemplating for several days, he asked his alcoholic father the same question.  His Dad answered this way..."It depends on whether you're pouring of drinking". Folks, I am pouring!  The glass is half full!  So, here is my proposition.  Every Thursday I will start a post entitled- tankful tursday Our objective is to come up with a list of things we are thankful for!  Now, it does not have to be weight loss related.  But since this is who we are, why not! Here is my list for today: 1) I am THANKFUL  for a loving wife and son! 2) I'm THANKFUL  for the ability to work and support my family. 3) I'm THANKFUL  for my health. 4) I'm THANKFUL  for my surgery and what it's done for me! Now the list does not have to be long.  This is just an exercise to help us keep the cup overflowing!  to keep us on the positive. If you are suffering from depression, please talk to your Dr. about it.  It happens to all of us sometimes! Oh yeah ~ I'm THANKFUL for you!  Have a good day!

Scott, This is such a good idea!  When my son died, someone gave me a grief workbook. In it, everyday, after I journaled, I had a space to write 5 things I was grateful for.  It really helped.  Here's my list: My family My faith Being an American-freedom Living in a beautiful area My home My WLS This group My friends Marilyn

How well I know the dark cloud of depression. It has been too close a companion for too much of my life. I do know that counting blessings helps keep the "stinkin thinkin" under control and the glass half full. I am THANKFUL for: 1) a loving and patient husband 2) my kids (and kids-in-law & grandsons) 3) my surgeries (bypass & plastics) and what they have done for my health 4) my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ 5) friends Good post!

It is so easy to focus on the negatives at times but your right we need to look at what is good in our lives and take prospective.  I am Thankul for  LIFE  in general. To be able to things I wasn't able to do before. I am Thankful for my daughters and my family that includes all of you here. I am thankful for the ability to work I am thankful for all my friends. Most of all I am Thankful to the one above who considers me worthwhile to bless  so greatly.

Wow!  I love this thread!!!!

I am thankful for my family...my wonderful husband who supports me in whatever I do and my precious, forward-thinking daughter who insists on challenging traditions that do not make sense.  She makes me think "out of the box!"

I am thankful to have both parents and all of my sisters alive and well.

I am thankful to have wonderful friends.

I am thankful to be healthy enough to work two jobs.

I am thankful to have a cheerful disposition.

Well some of my hormonal funk has vanished...  still waiting on the rest. But today I am thankful for Tim who is so understanding. He let me sleep in the spare room two nights in a row, knowing I just needed my space.  While he is always there to help make it better, his hug or touch can make me feel at peace...  but there were a few days where I pushed him away too...  and been all the more struggling due to this action.  I was ready for a hug and of course he was there to give it.  I'm thankful for great friends.  Jenn, Scott and Wendy each emailed me and gave me kind words of support. Susan, bless her heart... she knows all the hormone struggles I endure and she called me one day this week asking me "where ya been?  Is everything ok?"  I am blessed to have people, a support system, who love me and surround me with kind words.   Juanita emailed me too a few days ago... Tawyna did. Lord the list goes on. I am thankful for my surgery which gave me a life. Without it, I would be depressed, and fat.  Now I just struggle with depression on occasion but heck I can look good doing it, right? lol Hopefully I can get some Lexapro to put in my cup, Scott! bwaha!

Thanks Scott, even though I have never been touch by depression, this helps to put life in perspective.  It makes you remember that the little things are important daily ( and we all should acknowledge them more often). I am thankful for my loving, supportive husband, my son and daughter, their spouses and my new grandsons.  My sisters and families, mother-in-law and wonderful friends. I am thankful for this life and to be free in America. I am thankful for having a great job and people to work with who are truly a blessing to all they touch each day with their compassion. I am thankful to know the kindness and grace of God. I am also thankful for this new family I have this year (WLS friends, doctors and nurses). God Bless everyone

I have ALWAYS had an issue with depression so I certainly understand and I love the idea of this... 1. I am thankful that I found this site and for the kind words that you guys always have, 2. I am thankful that God saw fit to let me make it this far through so much (abuse, drugs, and 2 flatlines during surgery), 3. I am thankful that I have a full time job that I can really stand to go to everyday! 4. I'm thankful for my hubby who is so kind and 5. My mom who cleaned my drain 2 times a day for a solid month! 6. Most of all, right this moment; I'm thankful that I have things like this to go to and make me feel better and really put in things in order...
