Topic: Dumb...dumb...de dumb...DUMP!

So just when things are rolling along & I have made it to a year & think I have this thing mastered I do they DUMBEST thing and decide that at my son's Third Birthday Party today I can have some frosting off of his Birthday Cake....it was just the frosting that was between the pull apart cupcakes....I didn't eat any of the "cake" part---it was equivalent to about 2 to 3 tablespoons of frosting (okay..maybe a little more) and w/in 10 minutes I was so out of it that I went to the bathroom & got so sick that when I walked out it looked like I had been crying (really, I should have been crying at how stupid I was!).

Then, I became so exhausted that I could barely talk to anyone at the party....luckily cake is at the end of a party & not the beginning.

After having to lay down & sleep for more than two hours I was able to rise from the dumb-dumping dead graveyard & function a bit.

Why? Why? Why?  Such an addiction...even a year later sugar remains my achilles' heal & I still test it.  I flunked the test for sure today!

So...beware....our bodies have a way of reminding us that we have been surgically altered even when we are too stupid to forget.

xo, M.

Topic: Celebrating my ONE year Surgiversary!!!

Hi Everyone & Happy St. Paddy's Day!!  Today is my one year SURGIVERSARY & I am so thankful that I made the choice to have RNY surgery....it has been a life-changing year for sure &, aside from my husband & three kiddos, the best decision I have ever made.

I have "gained" so much this past year & so appreciate all of you who have been part of this journey...the support on this board is incredible & that has contributed to my success.

As of this morning I have forever lost 128 pounds since surgery (and if I count my highest pregnancy weight in 2007 I have lost 152 pounds)!  I reached weight loss goal at my 9 or 10 month mark & went from a BMI of 43 to a BMI today of 22.4. Of course, weight loss has stalled a bit (I would still like to lose 10 more pounds) but I am still very, very happy with how things have turned out.  I am so healthy & able to keep up with the kiddos...all my comorbidities are gone & I don't take any prescription medications for anything!  I work out (hard!) 5-6 days per week....became an avid runner & now am an avid cyclist....part of what I had hoped for as a result of the surgery.

Of course, I did learn that once I hit goal the "hard part" began....it was easier when I was watching the scale jump down 10 pounds per week & sometimes the varying 2 pounds up/2 pounds down is a little disconcerting, but it does have value--it reminds me to stay in the present every day with every choice I make so that I continue to maintain my weight.

Have a great St. Paddy's Day!!! xo, Micheala.

Topic: RE: Snack foods

The goal would be to eat three meals per day so that you don't "graze"---especially since eating a bunch of tiny "meals/snacks" can cause calories ot add up quickly.  Of course, that's the goal...and I still haven't been able to achieve it!  That said....string cheese, pistacios or almonds, even 16 Reduced Fat Wheat Thins with some salsa or, better yet (for some protein), 1/4 cup part skim mozz cheese melted on it.....these all work really well for me & are filling.

....remember, you always have the old faithful "unlimited" foods like sugar free popsicles, etc.....I just suggest that when you are thinking you are "hungry" you stop & think about if you are/really should be "hungry" and if you have eaten enough protein so far that day.

I also try to think about everything I am eating & ask myself before I eat it if there is a better choice that would satisfy me with less calories & more protein....

And for a sweet tooth...sugar free pudding....good luck! Micheala.

Topic: RE: Hi Again....popping in with a question on BLOATING!

Hi Steve...thanks for your post...I figured out the bloating...beware of Kashi Go Lean Protein + Fiber crunch cereal...I was adding it to my Carb Master yogurt & eeeks.....it was really terrible (more on that above)...

WOW.....CONGRATS on your success, too!  ...u gotta love Dr. Houston & Centennial...great program!  And, of course, your hard work!

I totally understand the battle to lose the last 10 pounds....my body seems to be happy right where it is...but, like you, I'm still not completely happy with the number on the scale.

At my nine month appointment w/Dr. H I had gotten to the point where I had lost 90+% of my excess body weight...BMI was normal, etc. & I was saying that compared to all the diets I had been on & off during my life that following the program post-surgery was easy & that losing the weight was after surgery was "easy".....then he said "yah, but now the hard part begins".....I thought about that a lot & he is right.  Battling the last 10 pounds...seeing the scale go a few pounds up/down every month....that's really hard....even though I would be content where I am now, I still really would like to lose 10 more pounds--I think I'd feel more "safe" & when the scale does flux a few pounds I would feel better about it.

You have done such a great job....can I ask what you are eating during the day?  How much are you able to eat?

Nice to meet you! Micheala.

Topic: RE: Hi Again....popping in with a question on BLOATING!

I had my gallbladder removed just before Christmas....and I don't have appendix.....good ideas, BUT I actually found my answer & it is so crazy!!!

Kashi Go Lean Protein + Fiber Cereal!!!!  That is the source of my problems!!!  I tried to think about what I was eating a week ago that was new....and I bought some of this to put 1/4 cup in my Carb Master Yogurts for something different in the morning....well, it tastes great...I just love the Protein Cereal, but when I Google searched Kashi + bloating + gas...OH MY GOODNESS....there are blogs & blogs & threads about the cereal & it causing severe bloating & gas.....so much that people have actually retitled the cereal with some really funny names (like Kashi GoFar* Cereal...eeewwww....and Kashi Little Golden Bloat Crunches).....although the forums I read were not specifically WLS related I am sure that is what it was.

I got rid of the cereal yesterday & have gone an entire day without any & oh my goodness...what a difference!!!  I am so relieved that it wasn't an obstruction, etc....just the silly cereal that I can live without.....another reason to stay away from processed, packaged foods!

Thanks for everyones responses!! xo, M.

Topic: RE: Hi Again....popping in with a question on BLOATING!

Thanks for the advice....I called Dr. H's office first thing this morning & am waiting for them to call me back.  Of course, I want to rule out bowel obstruction...bowels are moving, but, still....a serious condition so I want to rule it out.  I am so bloated that it even shows on the scale....it is worse every day & I am pretty sure it's not "real" weight gain b/c I am eating less than 1,200 calories & burning between 500-750 at the gym 6 days a week.

As far as nutrition, I haven't been doing beans...I will watch maltidol, but I can't remember having any....I did start adding a little ProLean Protein & Fiber cereal to my Carb Master Yogurt...so, maybe the fiber?  I am going to order the Probiotics for WLS pts today on Bariatric Advantage....I really want this to go away...I HATE the weight gain on the scale & I am uncomfortable (the pain is starting to ping in my back & all over my body from the bloating)....thanks for your advice!

xo, M.

P.S.  Trina--it was great to see you yesterday....you look wonderful & are such a sweetheart....

Topic: Hi Again....popping in with a question on BLOATING!

Hi Everyone...it has been what seems like forever since I have posted....I hope everyone is doing well.  This month will be my one year surgiversary (on St. Paddy's Day!) &, aside from my husband & three kiddos, having WLS was the best decision I have made!  I have been so happy with the success & my pre and post-op care with Centennial; I have worked really hard--which has resulted in 130+ pounds gone forever!  Everyone seems to think I am at goal, but I would still like to lose another 10 pounds....of course, those last 10 seem to be the most difficult.

I do have a question for you all...for the past week or so I have been dealing with HORRIBLE bloating, especially after I eat.  It has gotten really bad over the past 2-3 days & I seriously am feeling like I look 5 months pregnant right now.  My tummy is really bloated & as hard as a rock.  It seems like it is a little better in the morning (of course, I don't eat all night while I am sleeping) & is terrible at night....I called Dr. Houston's office & they said to take Gas-X, which I have been doing, but I think I need to follow up with them because it isn't helping.  I also picked up some bloating/gas relief capsuls from Whole Foods & have been mixing them into yogurt, but no relief there, either.  It's even starting to hurt on both of my sides & in my lower back.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be?  I haven't changed what I am eating...I pretty much eat the same things every day....has anyone experienced this?

It's nice to post again! xo, Micheala.

Topic: RE: 1 Year Anniversery

Hi Cathy! Congrats on your success...you are doing so great.....and THANK YOU for that post...I also feel like I could have typed that exact post myself...I am going through the same exact things that you are...my one year surgiversary will be St. Paddy's Day, March 17th...I have lost about 130 pounds (90% of my excess body weight), but still keep struggling with the same 3-5 pound weight loss & gain...everyone tells me that I need to stop losing, although I would like to be from 150-160 instead of 160-170 (I am 5'9", so I am in a size 8 or 9 right now).....I work out really hard at least 5 days a week (burning no less than 700 calories each workout...), but I still feel confused because I want to lose 10 more pounds & I am terrified that I will gain the weight back everytime my weight fluctuates.

By the way...what is LPT? For some reason that acronym isn't coming to me?

I see that you posted this back in February, so let me know how things are going for you....xo, Micheala.

Topic: 8 Months Post RNY & Bye Bye Gallbladder....

Yesterday I started feeling pretty run down in the morning--thought I was coming down with the flu---I was getting feverish & then I got a pretty strong pain right under my ribs on the right side....it came & went but at the worst I was doubled over & at best it was just throbbing....called Dr. Houston, went to the ER...ultrasound was done & it confirmed I have a 2cm gallstone. Shoot.  So, Dr. Houston is going to remove my gallbladder, but we agreed that I could take some meds this week to get through Thanksgiving & then have it done next week.....that good because it's a really busy week....

So, despite faithfully taking the Ursidiol med post surgery, I still have to have it removed....my big disappointment is that just the night before last I signed up to run the Jingle Bells 5K in downtown Franklin on December 5th...I was really looking forward to it....next year, I guess....

Hope everyone has a happy & healthy Thanksgiving week!!!

Micheala

Topic: I'm officially NORMAL!!!!!

I can't believe it---I am NORMAL!!!!  It has been 7.5 months since I had RNY surgery and today I decided to put my weight (I weighed 167 this morning...I am 5'9" tall) into the Centennial BMI calculator and ....OH MY GOSH....my BMI is 24.7 & that makes me "normal"!!!!

7.5 months ago my BMI was 43.3...I am so happy!

Now, just 12 pounds to the upper end of my goal range (145-155)...Micheala.

Hi Beautiful!!! I love looking at your pictures...you look amazing!!

And YES...bones!!! I had no idea that I had neck/clavicle bones...who knew?!?!?!  :).  I went my entire life saying I was "big boned"....funny...now I am buying size Small clothing and wearing size 10s.....7 months ago I was in 24s (and they were snug!).

I love bones. lol! xo, M.

My goodness...thank you!  A lot of friends/family are saying that, too--but there is still a bit more that can be gone in my opinion.  What is mind-boggling is that at nearly 300 pounds 7 months ago it is so strange to have people telling me they are concerned I will get "too skinny". Crazy. Me? Too skinny?

Dr. Houston was fine w/me losing down to 145--so, 25 more pounds is okay....I have worked hard & come this far...I do want to see goal!

Hi Everyone---my goodness it feels like forever since I have posted (although I read the posts daily)---a few months ago I was posting 3-4 times a day, but now the last thing I want to do is sit at my computer...I have missed everyone.

I finally took some updated photos....these are my 7 month post-op pictures.  I am 17 pounds from my original goal (although I have modified my goal to be 145 pounds instead of 155--I am 5'9.25" tall....so, we will have to see...)

As some of you know, I am so nervous when I post pictures....so hard for me to do....

I hope everyone is doing well....I have been praying for Ron & Marilyn & I know they are in your thoughts & prayers, too.

xo, Micheala.

Topic: RE: Actigall ??? for Houston RNY Patients

I just had my 6-month follow up w/Dr. Houston & was told I could discontinue the gallbladder med at that time.  I was on Ursidol, but I believe it's the same thing.  Apparently, after 6 months on the medication your chances of a gallbladder problem greatly reduces.

The Ursidol wasn't bad at all....it was a capsul & I just crushed it up twice a day in my Carb Master Yogurt....never bothered me....easy.

Micheala.

Topic: Happy 6 Month SURGIVERSARY to Me!!!

Hi Everyone....Today is my six month "Surgiversary". I saw Dr. Houston and...(kind of a drum roll)...weighed 175 pounds.  I started at 294 six months ago (was 289 on morning of surgery after 2 day liquid diet), so I have lost a total of 119 pounds in my six month journey!!!

I did find out something else today...I had thought this entire time that I was 5'8" tall---my husband thought I was taller, so we measured today.  He's right...I am actually 5'9-1/2!  Who knew?!?  (Apparently he did!).  So, at 5'9-1/2" my normal weight range would be 139-153.  That means 22 pounds until I am in my normal range.

Dr. Houston said I have lost about 80% of my excess weight & that I am "rockin-and-rollin this weight loss".  That made me smile.  I did have a WOW moment when he said that looking at me he would "never know" that I had a weight problem.  That is surreal to hear. I guess my mind has not caught up with my body yet.  Don't get me wrong, I am still not at goal (although we did talk a little about maintenance menus & how I would transition into maintenance), but I now starting to realize that I have a whole new transition to learn about & deal with....getting to goal & then maintaining it.  I was telling Dr. Houston that & he did say that the hard part is at a year or more out when you are trying to maintain the weight.  I am glad he said that b/c it definitely has me thinking about the future & how I will maintain the weight loss....but, not too fast, I still have my eye on the goal & want to work on getting there first!

I am so thankful to have had WLS....it has been amazing.  I have tried not to put "time lines" on myself w/my weight loss...I just work the program, but I am hoping to reach 153, the top end of my "normal" range by my 9 month appointment on December 17th.  7.5 pounds/month would get me there....I can do it!

Have a great day and, for those of you who are participating in the walk this weekend (I will be out of town....) stay dry & have a great time!

Thanks for all of your support.

xo, Micheala.
