Chronic Anemia?

Hello everyone!  I'm so glad to see the board still going strong!!!

I am 9 years post-op and recently almost died from being severely anemic. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Hello!!! Always so nice to see an "old face" come back! PLEASE say you'll stick around!!

Now..for your question..I'm 10 yrs post RNY, have always been pretty much diligent about taking my iron (yrs 3-4 could have been better), and have always had "perfect" labs, though, of course, a WLSer's "perfect" is not a normy's "perfect"..

To help us better answer your question:

Do your know what your lab "numbers" were? Do you take daily iron? You say you nearly dies. Did you have to have blood infusion?

If you don't mind sharing your story, it would be very much appreciated, and could certainly ba huge help to others.

In the meantime, I'll shoot a text to our resident "lab/vitamin guru", CAJUN GIRL, and ask her to read your post..

Again-WELCOME BACK !!!

I have almost died 2 times in the past 3 years from this issue. My current doctor said that when WLS began to change and develop different types - drs did not realize that people w/ history of anemia (which I had since I was a little girl - never to this extreme) probably should not have an RnY....
My RBC was at 8 if I was lucky! (Last time in hospital it was at 3....)
I did have a hysterectomy a few months ago and we are still monitoring the labs every month, but it looks like it has helped to some degree.

Anemia is fairly common for RNYers.  What type of iron have you taken, and how much?  Did you have a transfusion or infusions, if so what type and how often.

Do you have copies of your labs?  How is your B-12?

Sorry you are dealing with this.  I've had infusions last year and so far with taking Proferrin I've been able to keep my levels at an "acceptable" level; not great but not anemic either.
