I see you have TEACH in your name. I am a teacher as well. I would not go to Dr. Patel if you have any of the TRS active care insurances. He is not affiliated with a hospital that is considered a Blue Distinction Center and therefore BCBS will not approve your surgery. I was not told this by his office until I fulfilled all of my insurance requirments and was ready for surgery. This was despite having given them my insurance information the day I went to the free seminar. I am now having to depend on his office to refer me to a surgeon in Houston who can do the surgery.

I am a teacher and I have BCBS Active Care 2. It covers WLS as long as they are done at a Blue Distinction Center with 3 month medically supervised diet. All versions of BCBS are not the same and it appears that your coverage is dependent on the policy your employer picked.  Apparently the plan choosen for Texas teachers does cover weight loss surgery.
