Topic: Approved!!
Hello All,

My husband has finally received APPROVAL from Tricare for RNY.  Yeaaaaa!

Andrea at BMI has his file and will let us know if they have everything before scheduling his surgery.    Hopefully Hill AFB Med Group has sent over his records.  Sometimes dealing with a military organization isn't always smooth sailing.  But, I think we've taken care of everything else.

I will keep you posted.

Dr Cottam is a great doctor.  I was going to have him do my surgery because I felt he was very knowledgeable (hope I spelt that right, lol).  But later decided on going with Dr. Richards because it felt right to me.  BMI told me to plan on 3 hours for the inital consult also and I was there about the same amount of time you were.  They should probably start telling people to expect on being there for 4 hours.  Good luck with getting everything figured out and approved.  All of the before surgery stuff stressed me out more than anything else I have ever been through.  I will pray for you and your husband.  Hope we can keep intouch.

Angi,

Tricare sent us to Dr Cottam.  BMI said to expect to be there 3 hours...well it was about 4 to 4 1/2 hours.  But we got nearly everything done.  We are waiting for HAFB to send his medical records to them.  If our insurance person doesn't get them by next week, we'll have to make a visit to the base clinic.  And of course, we are waiting for Tricare to give their approval and authorization.

My husband is a nervous wreck since deciding to do the surgery.  But, he says he's going through with it because he has diebetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and joint pain.  His diabetes is managed well but he doesn't want to live with it at all if he doesn't have to.

Thanks for your reply Angi.

Later,

Michelle

Hi Michelle!

Welcome!  I am new here also.  I had the Lap Band done in June.  My surgeon is Dr. Richards at BMI.  I love her!  She did an amazing job.  I'm proud of you (and your husband) for making it through the initial consultation day.  That was a SUPER LONG DAY for me too.  I had a hard time working with the insurance person.  I didn't feel like she cared about me and I had to call her almost everyday to remind her to work on my case.  I had a deadline for when I could have my surgery though.  Other than that BMI is wonderful!  Who is your husband having do his surgery and which surgery is he going with?

I wish you both lots and lots of success and happiness!!!

Topic: New Here!
Hello Utah,

I'm not the SkinnyHusband.  My husband soon will be.
My husband doesn't get on these kinds of things so I'm doing it for him.
My name is Michelle.

He (we) has attended two different seminars. Both are a Center of Excellence.  We liked the first place best but found out that they do not accept Tricare so we are going with the Bariatric Medicine Institute (BMI).

My husband had an initial consult this past Wednesday.  That was a long day.  He saw everyone: doctor, nutritionist, exercise lady, psychologist, insurance person, and the nurse who took his blood.

All he is waiting on is for the Base Clinic (Hill AFB) to send his medical records to BMI and he should get a surgery date.  We told them that this was the last step we needed to complete for him to get a surgery date.  I hope they took the hint!

After reading a lot of posts about having to do the 6 month diet before approval; I'm glad we have Tricare.  Tricare doesn't seem to have a lot of hoops to jump through.

Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself.   I was just wondering if any fellow Utahans have gotten their WLS from one of the doctors at BMI?

I love reading all the wonderful success stories of everyone.

Later,
Michelle (the not so skinny wife!)

Topic: RE: DS'er relocating from AZ - need help!
Joyce,
Your not far from me, I live in West Haven, just north/west of Roy. I see Dr Simper at RAMP, he's the one that did my DS and from my understandings one of the few in state. Great Dr, he did my DS and 7.5 yrs ago my DH's RNY, wish they did the DS more often back than, I would have pushed for my DH to have had the DS.
But its great to see that your my area. We must meet up.

Thanks Lisa!
My husband is retired  AF and is now working in a gov job in SLC.  I live very near the base though and run over quite often for groceries, the splash pad, etc.  Maybe we could meet for lunch sometime?!

I already made an appointment with Dr. Kevin Gardner by Davis as recommended by someone on this forum.  I'll follow through with the appointment but will move on to another doc if he isn't a good match for me!  LOL!

I'll keep Dr. Anderson's name:)

Thanks again!

Welcome

I see Dr. Christina Anderson and she accepts Tricare if you came here with the military. She is downtown but her office sees patients here regularly in Davis I think.  I am pretty far out and just get my labs done at the clinic on base routinely.  My husband and I work on base...came here from Los Angeles with the military six years ago.  Please let me know if you need anything and I will be happy to help.

Hiya Utah friends!
I'm hoping for some ideas, info and WLS friendships!

I just relocated from AZ to Layton and had a revision to a DS a year ago with Dr. Keshishian in CA.  I love my DS!  ....  But, I know i'm due for a check-up so, I'm hoping for recommendations for a WLS friendly (someone who knows DS lingo?) pcp, DS surgeon's who may be willing to take on DS patient's, support group info, etc.

Do most of you facebook or have other chat sites somewhere?  This forum seems unusually quiet for a forum??

I'm looking forward to meeting bunches of you!

Topic: RE: Need help th Tricare!!!!
Mine was VERY easy, Tricare approved everything in 48 hours.  I talked to Dr. Anderson (my PCM on base) about wanting the surgery on Dec. 29th, and had my surgery Jan 24th.

What problems are you having?

Here's the info on the February meeting for that same support group. I used these docs for my RNY surgery and was also at the makeover meeting.

February Support Group Written by: RMAPNURSE - Thursday, February 3, 2011, 10:01 AM

After weight loss surgery and as your weight decreases, you might have questions about the extra skin “hanging around”. Questions like….Will the skin adapt to my new body with time? Does diet and exercise help with extra skin? Does how fast I lose the weight affect my skin elasticity? Is plastic surgery only a cosmetic treatment?

To answer these and any other questions that you might have, we invite you to join with us at our February support group meetings to hear from experts regarding those problem areas where there may be excess skin after weight loss surgery.

Salt Lake City, Wednesday, February 9 at 6:00 pm: Dr. J. Michael Self M.D, is in daily private practice in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at St. Mark’s Hospital and Cottonwood Medical Center. Orem, Wednesday, February 2 at 7:00 pm and Ogden, Tuesday, February 8 at 7:00 pm: DR. BRIAN BRZOWSKI is a cosmetic plastic surgeon with a special interest in breast surgery and problems resulting from pregnancy and weight loss. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Brzowski received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Georgia and an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a 5 year General Surgery residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and trained in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the prestigious and internationally renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Hope to see you there!

I may have found one, I just went in January.  It meets on the 2nd Wed of the month from what I understand and is at St Marks hospital.  In January, they had a special meeting with makeovers and I went with a friends daughter *****cently had RNY there, it seemed any one could go, all she knew is that it met on the 2nd Wed. but I don't know any further details, perhaps we can find out by going to their website, one of the docs names was Sherman Smith I believe.

Topic: West Valley RNY referral...
I am almost 4 years out and moved here 6 months agao.  Last night I had the worset dumping syndrome I've ever had, ended up throwing up blood.  I'm going to check with my insurance company to see if who is the closest to me but was wondering if anyone knows of an RNY surgeon in the West Valley City area.  I'm hoping it's not serious...

Just wondering if you have found a support group.  I moved here about 6 months ago too and have not found one.  I live in West Valley so if you hear of one please post it.  I think there are alot of people that would be interested.  I'm almost thinking I'll start my own.

Thank you,
Susi
Topic: RE: lap band support groups near Hill AFB?
Hi had RNY by Dr. Richards 3 years ago and I am doing well.  I work at Hill.  I know your Dr. has support groups at Davis Hospital once a month since I still get the newsletters.  I don't know of any other support groups.

I live on Hill and am looking to have RNY soon.  I already have my referral approved to see Dr. Richards (the female doc that works with your surgeon), had the bloodwork done, and am going to the seminar on Wednesday.  Do you live on base?

Hi All!

I am looking for any support groups for Lap Band patients in my area. I attend the support groups offered by my weight loss center, however looking for some new friends closer to me who meet more frequently. Let me know if there are any of you out there!
