5 days post op IS THERE ANYONE LIKE ME????

Okay,

After surgery I had a couple rough days- but now I am feeling really well there is only one thing

IM STARVING!!!!!!!!!!!! It is not just in my head I have the hunger pains the empty feeling the growling. Is this normal. I do not know if I can make another week on only clear liquids. In fact I can not even sleep because my stomach is so active and hungry.

I am actually craving refried beans with taco bell hot sauce. What is wrong with me.

Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

Thx

active or working to adjust..

Yep, can confirm you are perfectly normal.  What you are experiencing are the awful gremlins....I mean grehlin that is left in your tummy.  Grehlin is what impacts on hunger.  It will pass in a couple of days.  The growling is not hunger, but gas maybe even some reflux, that to will settle down.  You might need some nexium or something for the gas.  You are also mental adjusting, so these symptoms of grehlin, gas and reflex will mentally translate as hunger.  Mind you I am no expert, but I can confirm that I had a bit of this to early on.  Many do.

I did not have to stay on clear liquids for 2 weeks, I was on full liquids from like day 3.  You might want to call your surgeons office and ask if you can go to full liquids a few days earlier.

Yep, I was like that for ages!  It has gotten better, but I'm still hungrier than most seem to be.  I just had a little nibble of a snack when I felt like that and tried not to worry about it.    --Dorothy
Yes. I am on day 10 post op and had to do 7 days clear liquids following surgery. I can say I was hungry too those first fews days. And i had done 7 days clear liquids pre-op. I started full liquids yesterday and can say the hunger feelings have past for the most part. Hang in there...you can do it. Just think about your new tummy and how it needs to heal and you wouldn't want to jeopardize it in any way.

My tummy was like that for about the first 3-4 days until my doctor gave me a prescription for Nexium.  Are you taking a PPI? (such as Nexium, Prilosec, or Prilosec OTC).  Your tummy is still producing the same about of acid right now and it can burn and give you that starving feeling.

If you are already on a PPI, I can't help you, cause that it what fixed my "hunger pangs" early on!  Still to this day, 9 months out, if I forget to take my PPI, I can feel it.  I tend to want to eat more to fill up that "empty" feeling in my tummy.  (So I don't forget it very often!!!)

I hope you get relief soon,
Brooke

I will just have to bear through this I can do it. I have to. You are absolutely correct I do not want to do anything to jeapordize my tummy.

Thanks again.

I second the vote for stomach acid. Try something stronger than the pepcid. Maybe get a prescription?

Kimberly
Pepcid is not a PPI.  Please call you doctor and ask for a prescription for a PPI.  If not, at least go to the store and get Prilosec OTC.  It works differently than Pepcid.  I think you will see a big difference.  No need to suffer.

Sounds really similar to what my husband was experiencing.  From day 1 he had really strong horrible stomach pains that felt like hunger.  He would feel it when he thought about food, smell food, saw a food commercial.  He hadn't been takin his stomach acid medication so they told him to do that.  This "pain" that he has felt has been dramatically reducing over the past 3 weeks.  I am not sure if he feels it anymore.
He does crave foods, but he is able to manage the craving.  But the first day he could eat "soft foods" he insisted on his favorite pizza and ate 1/3 cup of the toppings.  He had been craving that since the hospital.
I felt the exact same way as you did, in fact i still get the very loud gurggling in my tummy and i hate it, it can happen ten or so minutes after drinking/eating my soups or whatever. im hoping it goes away as i grow my into this sleeve

The growling/gurgling can be from drinking too fast. It feels just like hunger. So does acid reflux. Are you on a PPI?

I think some hunger is normal in the first 2 weeks, but starving hunger sounds like a symptom of something else.
